The saddest part about Karin's backstory is that, it's a direct parallel to what the Japanese army did to Chinese and Korean "comfort women" (also known as sex slaves) during WW2. Even Orochimaru is a subtle reference to some of the experimentation that Japan did during the war as well.

I rly like the historical parallel the other commentor mentioned. But story wise, Karin's backstory just doesn't fit her character. It rly was sad. But one point, I feel like the sad backstory felt forced, like being too extra. Her character development has been shitty and shallow the whole show and this episode just doesn't fit. Fans will argue if it's canon or not. But I know it's not in the manga. Even in the manga, there was so much shitty story choices Kishimoto made that undermines the actual good parts. Like how they built up such a tragic death for Choji in old Naruto. Then he didn't even die. It was just brushed off so casually. Rewatching this show as an adult rly makes all bad writing glaring obvious. Lol I just can't help but cringe at some of them.

But atleast in the first part and growing up they were not friends unless im remember wrong. The shippudden flashbacks of shikamaru and choji being his "friend" are not canon.
