I've been waiting for this episode since they started the series!

They didn't copy the joke from Southpark, its a common trope originating from Star Trek. Kirk went to an evil timeline where Spock had a goatee.

Jonathan Trachtenberg

I went for Premium in time to catch this specific episode - it's amazing. He asked about why the goatee for evil versions of yourself - it's a reference to the Star Trek Original Series episode Mirror, Mirror (Season 2, Episode 4)

Melonie Mitchell

The alternate timeline/universe nod originated in Star Trek the Original Series. Where the alternate/evil Spock had a goatee. I believe other Star Trek series also did travel to the other/evil universe as well.

Legion

Isn't the goatee=evil thing from old Star Trek?

Asadullah Khan

Yay, Suraj and Micky are back. Great reaction. Love this episode, definitely one of my favorites.

Neil Prospect

So happy Suraj is back for this episode

Afif Majid

this is basically the start of phase 2 for community, for me at least

Kelly Parks

The "Mirror, Mirror" episode of the original Star Trek is the origin of the goatee thing. <a href="http://robonwriting.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/EvilSpock.jpg" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://robonwriting.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/EvilSpock.jpg</a>

You beat me to it! <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mn09yexmwSI" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mn09yexmwSI</a> Evil Spock is the one with goatee. It has been parodied in many places, including sourthpark and futurama. <a href="http://images1.fanpop.com/images/photos/1500000/Bender-and-Evil-Bender-futurama-1594483-703-462.jpg" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://images1.fanpop.com/images/photos/1500000/Bender-and-Evil-Bender-futurama-1594483-703-462.jpg</a>

Yeah for all the hype this episode has people don't seem to talk about how big a revelation there is at the end and how sad it is. Which is community at it's best, hilarious and sad

WB

I thought everyone knew that goatees are evil came from Star Trek
