Of the many MANY locations we've visited on this season of Journey Across Japan, this was the one I would go back to the most.

IN this week's Patreon behind the scenes episodes I explain why. ALSO plenty of outtakes and a ton of commentary revealing the real reason our plans for staying overnight on the island fell through.

JAJ: Lost Islands | Episode 4: The Last of Us (Patreon Exclusive)
🌋Watch: https://youtu.be/jtyG47FIhuY

With only one more episode of Journey Across Japan: The Lost Islands, an incredible season of adventure, embarrassment and volcanoes is coming to an end.  I'd be lying if I said editing each of these episodes hasn't been hellish.

To my knowledge, I'm one of the only Youtube creators I know, who has over 500,000 subscribers, but stupidly continues to edit their own videos. And sometimes I regret that when I miss an upload date or stay up until 8am in the morning editing.

But when the video goes up and thousands of people around the world sit down to watch it, and share photos or thoughts on how they felt experiencing it, it always makes those long hours and days worthwhile.

We do now have a wonderful editor (called Dave believe it or not), who's been doing a fantastic job on some upcoming videos and at last I foresee a future where I can spend less time at a computer desk, and more time producing videos without sacrificing production quality or the identity of the Abroad in Japan channel.

While Journey Across Japan has been going on I've been out filming FOUR new videos in every corner of Japan and later this week and I look forward to sharing with you all what they're about in the coming days.

For now enjoy the behind the scenes episode and I'll chat with you later in the week!
Chris

JOURNEY Across Japan | Episode 4: Why I Want to Return to the Lost Island (Patreon Exclusive)

In this week's episode Joey, Natuski and I explored Japan's biggest theme park - with some exercise thrown in - and we wander across a genuine post-apocalyptic looking wasteland.

The latest episode of JAJ was incredible! It was absolutely worth the wait. Great work Chris.

Great episode, can't wait for the finale next week 😍

This latest episode just shows how much effort you put into your editing. Absolutely shines through. Be proud, your hard work is shining through dude.

AndyJapandy

Do you see yourself starting up a production company at this rate? I've worked as an editor for one in Tokyo and I learned a lot putting in the work.

Anonymous

Welcome Dave! Give yourself some free time Chris!

Anonymous

it's been fun. It's just ending too soon. Perhaps I was spoiled by the first journey? The second journey was great too.

Anonymous

We definetely appreciate all the effort you put into the editing, it really shows. Also, for some reason, I look forward to these BTS videos more than the actual ones. So much so, that this week, I have been waiting to watch this BTS video before the actual one.😂

Arthur

Finally, the second coming of Dave in Japan! But jokes aside, I'm glad you're finally getting an editor! Good luck!

Great work Chris Loved the latest series so far. Focus more on your health and less on editing!

Issa Hudgins

Melon the cat was DEF pregnant. Poor baby 😞

DinoKōyō

We really appreciate your hard work Chris! It’s one of the reasons why I decided to become a patron. You put your hart and soul into your videos and it shows, so be proud of them :) Great episode btw!

Satomi Arihara

Age is just a number. I'm forty-seven years old too 🤣

The hours of effort you put into all your videos is plain to see and very appreciated, but I'm so glad you've found an editor you're comfortable working with! Hopefully it frees up some of your time for things you find more fun.

Dave has a lot to live up to but if you think he has the skills to edit AIJ videos to the same caliber you do, his ability must be off the charts. Best of luck to Dave (in Japan)!

Have been watching your videos for ages - ever since I started planning my first trip to Japan in 2018 with my wife - and only just took the plunge and became a patron, and am so glad I did. You put a ton of effort into your videos and it's lovely to see how things work behind the scenes! Good luck with the new editor, and hope Dave's work means you can relax a bit and spend more time making cool videos.

I am very glad Dave from Seattle has joined the team finally....

harupi

cheers Chris, thank you always for the hardwork and quality content!

You won't have to overwork yourself anymore! Just wondering, I'm sure you'll be reviewing Dave's outputs, do you expect to make additions/edits/changes from your end afterwards? If so, hope they won't be much. Thank you, as always!

Love the high quality videos. Keep up the awesome content.

After that opening Monologue I would like to ask you a couple of questions.... While walking along in desert sand, you suddenly look down and see a Natsuki crawling toward you. You reach down and flip him over onto his back. He lies there, his belly baking in the hot sun, beating its arms and legs, trying to turn himself over, but he cannot do so without your help. You are not helping. Why?

Leah Webber

Hopefully passing off some of you editing will let you focus on your more ambitious projects with more energy. I look forward to trying to guess who is editing from now on. (Also, welcome Dave in Japan! Your coming has been long foretold!)

Alex Bentley

Ok I'm only 20 seconds into the BTS video but I had to pause and finish dying from laughter at Natsuki saying "Ayyy. Fucking walking." I feel the the tone of that sentence sums Natsuki up 100%

Anonymous

wait was there like a dead dog or deer in this video? At like 4:53 on the right

Anonymous

Missed opportunity to name the cat Catsuki. Next time I guess

Hopefully you can return to that hotel on a wacky weekend with Connor!

Laura Beaumont

Can’t wait for Dr Jelly’s return! 🙌🏻

abroadinjapan

Yeah I’ll definitely be finishing up the last 10% for the first few videos to make sure everything is how I want it. The idea is for no one to notice a shift in tone or quality on the channel and I’m confident he can pull it off!

abroadinjapan

Well spotted! Thankfully I think it was just some cardboard or rubbish from one of the buildings

abroadinjapan

Thanks for the long term support Evan! I’ve seen you for years shouting out Abroad in Japan on Twitter and I’m incredibly grateful!

Another awesome episode and BtS, Chris! Thank you as always! It's amazing that you still edit your own videos (until you got an editor) but shows how much effort you put into making them great and it always shows so I appreciate it. Don't worry too much if you miss an upload date/need to delay it, whatever you feel is best and doesn't affect your health in a negative way!

Susan Ray

Hi Chris. Brand new Patreon. Late to the party as I just stumbled onto your channel recently. But I've been binge watching past videos to catch up. This one is absolutely incredible.

Great episode!! The drone shots were incredible !!! The number of abandon buildings.. and the way nature overtook them Is amazing.

skwukong

So we now have a real Dave in Japan! On another note, the production quality of The Lost Islands has been really fantastic! I personally would still go back to the first JAJ (neverending cycle of despair!!) because of the status of my life around that time, but, I feel this series has been objectively better planned and produced.

New patreon subscriber here from Malaysia! Your videos have gotten me through the pandemic and I can't thank you enough. Can't wait to visit Japan again but till then I will continue to live vicariously through your videos :)

Astor Reinhardt

I think I'd prefer to go to Ikeshima. If I'm going to an abandoned place, I kind of want to explore it on my own, not via a guided tour. I hope you do go back to Ikeshima for a more in depth exploration as well as the amusement park.

Anonymous

Dave in Japan finally earning the credit he's been claiming this whole time!

Anonymous

You've got an editor, now time to slowly wean yourself off BOSS coffee so you can sleep before 3AM :D

April Norton

Adding Ikeshima to my Japan visit list. ✔ That island was so hauntingly beautiful. Great job as always , Chris, and congrats on the new editor!

Anonymous

Glad to finally be a supporter here on Patron. I would also like to say that these videos for Journey Across Japan Three were great.

Anonymous

Excellent loved it

Anonymous

when will the next live video will be ??

Anonymous

Are you allowed to go into the buildings on Ikeshima? Maybe you could do like a ghost hunting episode there.

Anonymous

There’s a couple of tunes you use in a lot of your videos, one has the car honking in the intro, and the other one has more of a funky sound. Are those original compositions?

Anonymous

Saw this and thought of you. Here's ways to expand your beat box sound. https://youtu.be/QuysZvtpbeE?t=56

Audio Dragon

I'd like to go to Ikeshima. I'd also want to go to the town where they've made mannequins or dolls to replace people because the population is low. I think I saw it on James May's Japan Series.

Jette Nielsen

I'd choose Ikeshima. I definitely prefer being able to explore on my own.

Anonymous

The King of Pussy nailed it with "broken dreams", simple (and sad) but very true.

Anonymous

Ikeshima!! Would love to go there and to Nagasaki! Thank you for showing it so beautifully!

7:14 animeman: that's 20+ years of abandonment chris: that's how I was raised.
