Ace's shirts with the different Kanji on them in this arc match his ideals at each shirt change-- it starts with things like "violence" and changes as he goes through different experiences "wilderness" "independence" and the very last one, ironically (because marines wear this word) "justice." Ace was a hidden, isolated child, and he grows to accept and love people because of and starting with his brothers. Internal ideals and principles are very important to him as he grows into an adult.
