Another year in the books my friends, thanks for going on this ride with me. This is the last stop on the DTG 2023 express and it's... I think it's a good video. Admittedly, I was NOT excited to make this one but my feelings on that are complex.

In a nutshell, I write about something here that REALLY bothers me about how we consume media and fiction these days or at least how I consume it now. And because of that, because it IS something that bothers me, my energy behind this whole video's production was at an all time low haha. I feel like what I'm saying is important, and I think it'll be received well, but I also just feel like I'm complaining a bit haha. Idk, maybe that'll be entertaining.

I've done a lot of "player perception" focused work this year, playing stuff we hate, enjoying fiction wrong, how reviews affect us, how hype affects us... and that all has it's place. But I think in 2024 I'm going to focus a lot more on specific games and stories. Sort of like the time video, the elevator one, the waking up one. I think I'm beginning to like making that style of video more. I'll probably still do all kinds of stuff in 2024 haha, but expect it to be a much more specific fiction analysis kind of year.

Anyways, thank you all so very very much for 6 years. It's an pleasure to do this, and it's an honor to have you all as my audience <3

We Consume Fiction Wrong

And it happens for TV and movies as well. It’s like I can’t turn my brain off and just enjoy things for what they’re worth, and instead can’t help but critically think about all of the details behind how it was made/developer decisions/writing directions, etc. Let’s talk about that. Can't believe it's been 6 years already! I know I haven't been with you for that long, but I discovered you during lock down and it still just seems like that was a few weeks ago! Ha! Great video to end the year with! I have really been struggling with the whole analyzing as I consume media, though. I've stopped a lot of games (including TOTK!) and shows because they weren't "what I wanted." However, I think being so depressed that I only want to watch shit Christmas movies has helped haha so we'll see how 2024 goes! I'm for sure going to try Outer Wilds again, though not until AFTER Rebirth. Right now I am focusing on replaying the first part of the FFVII remake in preparation. Cannot WAIT. Also, just have to say, I appreciated that you used Replicant footage at the end of the video when you said "When you think something is profound." HELL YEAH THAT GAME IS PROFOUND 😂 Enjoy your time off, my friend. Happy Holidays!

Lockdown was when the gears wheels really began to turn for the channel so that checks out! Everything before it is a blur even for me haha. That feels like a whole topic in itself tbh, when just NOTHING is appealing? I haven't had that in awhile but I know the sensation very very well. I hope your depression subsides! Whatever it is, it's nothing you can't handle and I'm sure it'll pass. Choose to se the good! Oh and I'm on to FF7Remake again after I finish what I'm on as well. Dammit, Rebirth is gonna be so much fun! I knew you'd notice that ending bit haha, it really is!! Finished it last night. Happy Holidays Andrea!

Finally had time to watch, and what a great way to end a year of banger videos! I think this topic works really well with music. On one extreme are questions of "will learning music theory stunt my creativity?" as if knowing rules and conventions is a limitation. The other extreme is breaking immersion because of noticing a pattern. I was at a party with some jazz/techno music I liked, but a friend was annoyed and said "every song has been the same blues progression". And yeah if you recognize that pattern it will start to feel same-y. Similar arguments could be said for 4-chord-songs or Ludovico Einaudi. A lot of classical music is so complex with centuries of global history that people feel they have to be experts to articulate why they like something. And that's not necessarily a bad thing, it gave me a deeper understanding and appreciation. But it contributes to the problem of elitism in music. The "Aragorn broke his toe kicking the helmet in LOTR" type of statement is so ingrained in music it's almost a requirement. Motifs and quotations of other music are so common that "theme and variation" is an entire genre. Certain combinations of notes are referred to by name: the Tristan chord, dies irae, the lick. But I don't think there's an easy way to find out what aspects of music break immersion based on how much expertise you have. This channel has always been a one of a kind intersection between entertainment and science that's scratched a particular itch. Thrilled that there's more to come!
