The time has come. A dozen months, a dozen videos now in the books. I think we ended on a banger, this feels like some of my most thorough work of year considering how much damn Pokémon I played and watched to prepare for this lol. Frankly it feels like I've been prepping for this one all of my life haha.

I've been playing Pokémon since I was in diapers and I have always deeply treasured the series. This is sort of my way of both appreciating what worked in the past and dissecting how Game Freak can use that moving forward to make Pokémon battles feel larger than life again.

I hope you enjoy the first non-psych related DTG video in a very very long time, and I hope that it feels as academic and entertaining as previous videos have. This was stupidly fun to make and if this is how video production feels moving forward, 2023 is going to be a feast.

Thank you all SO incredibly much for a brilliant year and I am thrilled to have you along for the ride in the next one <3

Old 3D Pokémon Games Hit Harder

Get up to 40% off with my link https://ridge.com/daryl from now until December 22nd! Thanks again to The Ridge for sponsoring! As the years have gone by, I have aged and the wonder of Pokemon battles has dissipated. Strangely, this same wonder for sports has not. And after doing a LOT of watching Pokemon battle film from pretty much… every 3D Pokemon game created… I think the reason for this change is less to do with my age and more to do with camerawork. Today, we’re talking cinematography. Today, we’re talking about why older pokemon games seem to hit harder. do yourself a *massive* favor and turn on fixed camera for dragon quest 11; it instantly fixes everything you're frustrated with (dragon quest has been making fights look flashy for years; I remember people using it as an example to rip on pokemon's static sprites when it had full animation!) also dq11 is a fantastic game don't give yourself a subpar experience (and if I wasn't already stanning for four games I would have pushed harder on it too :V)

daryltalksgames

Oh good to know! I actually haven't played DQ11 yet, it's sitting on my shelf and I absolutely plan to play. Having seen some combat I was shocked at how muted it felt, but that was likely due to the fixed camera thing or just finding a bad little stretch of the game. I appreciate you letting me know!

Pape

This was amazing. Not only the subject matter was interesting and refreshing, the varied references you pulled from sports to movies (and of course games) really illustrated perfectly your points. I also love that you addressed the Jackie Chan's still shot philosophy because I was sure wondering what were your thoughts on it watching the video hehe. An all-around banger!

daryltalksgames

Thanks so much Pape, glad you enjoyed it! The Jackie Chan philosophy was super important because BOY cameras really can ruin a scene haha. Gotta have that counterargument in there :)
