I love Wil Wheaton's take when talking to the writers "Earth in the 31st century has become so fearful, zenaphobic and isolationist... I mean, this supposed to be FICTION, right?" and the writers just gave him a look that said - yeah, no... we're addressing current issues, that's what we're doing. perfect.
