ymmv but I think the way charlie is written reflects the possible impact of getting bullied for being a gay, not straight-passing twink quite realistically. all those "problems" he has might be annoying to watch for you but it’s all interconnected and makes sense in the aftermath of getting outed, bullied and assaulted. i think some would let it roll off their backs more easily than others because of different predispositions, but for many that’s what happens. i get if that’s not your cup of tea but in my opinion it’s hardly about charlie having "flaws" and nick being perfect. it’s about the struggles charlie faces essentially just for existing vs nick who is shielded from experiencing those same struggles simply because his existence doesn’t trigger homophobes as much. so in a way his looks and being straight-passing directly influence him having the freedom to also be more confident and less meek or whatever. also charlie’s not some older character avoiding help for years and treating others like shit using mental illness as an excuse. he's a 15 yo dealing with recent trauma and his mental state (in my opinion) feels realistic given the timeline. especially because he has never opened up about it before. regarding anyone gay watching this and not being cynical: i’m gay and i do like HS overall, but I'm 100% with you on the sex thing - it's my main issue with the show. especially next episode has some dialogue that had me tab out for a moment 😶 the timeline for the intimacy doesn’t make sense, can’t and won‘t defend that. not even necessarily the waiting in itself but how they go about it and stuff like Nick apparently "not knowing" how to give someone a hickey but lowkey looking like was ready to fuck on top of the Eiffel Tower lmao. i guess knowing they‘ll get there is consoling though.

Yeah I hear you. It’s just frustrating because Tao who is not my favorite character does stand up for himself even though I would argue he too is not your standard “straight passing” male. He is just as skinny and awkward as Charlie. He may not have the official label of gay but people like Harry perceive him as effeminate and bully him too but he defends himself. Everyone handles things differently but the character development with Charlie is particularly slow imo. He seems to be getting worse because he’s not actually ok with being Nick’s secret but he’s too afraid to say so. It’s hard to see since other shows with the out gay character at least let that character have moments of strength. Charlie has moments but then almost immediately goes back into a mode of needing his boyfriend to save him. Even Isaac who never says anything stood up to Harry in this episode. I was a skinny out gay teen as well and was not “straight passing” and was bullied but it’s something that you just have to go through until you stand up for yourself. Once you do then bullies eventually leave you alone. They are picking on Charlie because they know he won’t say anything back. I’m just wondering how far Charlie needs to be pushed in order for him to think he’s worth something.

i believe the bottom line about tao standing up for himself under similar circumstances while charlie doesn’t is mental health. i.e higher vulnerability to mental health issues (rather than strength vs weakness) sets charlie apart from tao. coping mechanisms, neuro differences and genetics all play a part in why some people are mentally ill and some aren’t even when facing the same stressors. otherwise everyone on earth would be mentally ill since we all experience trauma at one point. but with untreated MI you continue to struggle even after the original trigger is removed. charlie isn’t written the way he is to be the damsel in distress and to romanticise being "saved" or for his timidness to be some character quirk, but rather because his mental health is one of the main issues HS tackles. a supportive boyfriend isn’t going to alter his brain chemistry enough to actually let him recover. so in short, i think in order for charlie to see his self-worth he‘ll need to start his recovery process, but that barely started atp as it was the first time he even acknowledged any of his struggles out loud. but I totally see why casual viewers might miss the focal point that is charlie’s MI arc at this point of the story, because agreed - this season is slow as fuck and makes it seem like nick’s coming out is the main cause of charlie‘s anxiety, even though that’s not the case. i think maybe it was a bad call adapting just one comic volume in season 2 when they could have zipped through two that would have balanced out their individual storylines more. that’s why nick‘s coming out storyline seems so dragged out and charlie’s mental health one is at such a plateau rn. i guess next season will make up for it because they’re back to adapting two (packed) volumes. but yeah generally speaking: been there done that too and not gonna argue with your point about eventually just needing to stand up for yourself 😄

I love this comment for the discussion of mental health and Tao vs. Charlie comparison. Very well said! 👏
