charlie’s mum is portrayed as emotionally distant in the comics and tends to complain about her kids a lot. I don’t think it’s her being homophobic either but it’s fair to say she only acknowledges charlie when she’s annoyed with him and completely ignored his mental health struggles in the past. selective attention that will definitely come back to bite. it’s like a role reversal between her and tao's mum. like you said, she’s defying the asian mum stereotype. I think david and harry are realistic villains in the sense that they’re both fucking toxic, but get away with it by downplaying what they’re doing. harry constantly belittles nick's and charlie's feelings, acting like they’re being moody with him for no reason and disguising his homophobia as "just joking". david as well, he acts like it’s his right to be "skeptical" when he’s straight up being biphobic/homophobic, and labels nick as the one overreacting.. i hate how nick‘s mum didn’t really call david out in that scene and instead focused on something as minor as swearing.

One thing about Charlie's situation is that it's frustrating to not see his parents try to talk to him at all. Charlie's grades slipping isn't just him 'spending too much time with his boyfriend', it's him being paranoid and obsessive. Maybe if Nick's grades were also slipping, that would make sense. But Nick is doing great in school and Charlie suddenly is having issues. Instead of just banning Charlie from seeing Nick (which they could still do), they need to talk to him. Figure out what is going on or why Charlie is feeling so obsessive or worried over it. There are lots of other reasons we see later on why I don't really like his parents' reactions to things, but even just these two episodes show how they (especially his mother) jumps straight to punishments or rules instead of actually talking to Charlie. They didn't even congratulate him on having a boyfriend last episode, it was immediately 'rules' and kinda a weirded-out reaction. Also in the comics, it's a bit of a running joke on how obvious Nick and Charlie are. Like everyone kinda knows but no one says anything to them about it in the comics.
