I love Lip, and I agree that he's very loyal to people, but I don't find his reactions to the girls he's impregnated or his assuming care for Xan as heart-warming as it sounds like you do. Along with his issues with substance use, Lip has had lots of unhealthy co-dependent relationships with people, almost certainly because of how he was raised by absent/neglectful parents. His attachment to Karen was extreme and very damaging for him - especially because she proved to be so awful. And just like how Debbie was desperate to have a baby as a teen and everyone thought she was nuts and nowhere near prepared for it, Lip has wanted one too, probably for similar reasons. He's wanted to be a father since he thought Karen was pregnant with his kid. He made that dickish comment to Mandy once about rolling the dice, and immediately jumped on Tami for an answer about what she's going to do because he thinks being a father will somehow solve his problems. I also saw his assuming care for Xan, though well intentioned, as not the smartest or healthiest thing. If he needs something dependent on him to feel like he has purpose, he should get a dog. I personally think he's got some more growing up and stabilizing to do before he should become a parent.
