Alan Cumming makes this one a lot more enjoyable than it would be otherwise; his acting is to such a level of flamboyantly OTT that it adds *so* much energy to the (dare I say) dull rest of the episode. S'not a favourite, but I at least respect them touching further into this era of history

I agree with some of the elements you highlighted where this series fails to succeed. (Depending on your own taste and perspective of course.) The companion centric focus that used to be very much the bread and butter since the relaunch, isn't an apparent focus for this show runner. At least it's not coming across like that to me anyways. They are fine enough characters and the actors sporadically deliver with the material they've been given. Which feels at times like they have been relegated to background supporting roles. Quite often the guest stars outshine them. I'd say this episode is the perfect example of that. I actually think this is one of the better episodes of series 11. However if situated in another, I'd probably relegate this to more middle of the road at best. This series is in the unfortunate position of collectively having great potential that is more often not realised by failing to stick the landing in the final act.

Not much to say on this one. Not the worst, not the best. The ending is FAR too rushed, but other than that I don't have much to say. Third time in a row they've gone to an interesting historical time period and really didn't need any alien entity to make it interesting. The drama and tension could have all come from the idea of them being tried as witches. I wish they would trust in doing a pure historical at some point.
