Just to catch you up on the timeline here, as it's always quite confusing; after this episode, River ends up seeing Tennant, back in her first episode with the Library- and yep, she dies! Twelve hands her the screwdriver she had in that episode here, and he even scans her with it, which we can assume is him implanting that copy of her which Ten uses to save her. (10 finds it in the sonic, and acknowledges that future-him must've recorded it for the Library computer.) In terms of why River doesn't believe it could be The Doctor here; whilst it's a rather thin-stretched goof, Matt Smith was the 'last' incarnation in the regeneration cycle (John Hurt and Tennant's brief regeneration in Season 4 counted). If you recall, The Timelords gave him a new cycle through The Crack, hence why Twelve exists- unknowing to River. Great reaction, and pumped for the next special/season!

Rivers speech realising who the Doctor is and the scene at the singing towers make this episode. It’s so sad how River thinks the Doctor doesn’t love her and seeing the doctors reaction to that. It’s the fact she’s not really wrong that sucks. She says she’s okay with it but I can’t imagine how anyone can be. Romantically he may not be capable but he does love her deeply in a way. I think he just shows his love through actions rather than words. Him staying with her in Dariliyum for 24 years is just that. Such a beautiful gift. All we ever want is more time with the people we care for. And yes! They have mentioned the singing towers a few times throughout Rivers run.

Great reaction, I love this episode. It gets stronger and stronger the more I watch it. Yes, this is supposed to be the last thing he does with her before she goes off to the Library. I think the idea is that during the 24 years, they go on trips and adventures together.

Right but they can only travel within that planet since he promised a day (24 years) on that particular planet. I wonder how much they could possibly do on one planet for 24 years. Both of them have short attention spans😂🤔

The doctor only gets 12 regeneration cycles. Even though Matt Smith was Doctor #11 he was the 12th regeneration so Matt Smith should have been the LAST doctor. Matt Smith mentions this to Clara during his last episode and the Doctor should have died with Matt but remember the timelorda gave him a whole new regeneratiom cycle. River was not there for that and had no idea he received another cycle. She was just being logical there was no way in her mind he had a new face. We have heard about Darillium before. To quote River from Forest of the Dead: "The last time I saw you-the real you, the future you, I mean-you turned up on my doorstep with a new haircut and a suit. You took me to Derillium. To see the Singing Towers. The towers sang, and you cried. You wouldn't tell me why but I suppose you knew it was time. My time. Time to come to the Library. You even gave me your screw driver. " Darillium was also mentioned in a minisode with Matt Smith called Last Night where we see two versions of River and the Doctor in the Tardis. Future River tells our Doctor that he is taking her to see the singing towers of Darillium and both Doctors give eachother a knowing look. We are meant to believe this happens offscreen but I am so glad they did this with Capaldi. The Doctor knows that Darillium will be the last night with River so he always puts it off but couldn't put it off any longer. But they get 24 years together ❤ Also, there is a series called the Diary of River Song that is audio only. It details all of her adventures she has with and without the Doctors. And Alex Kingston just dropped a River Song/Melody Malone book back in May of this year. Just some more River Song content for once you are done with the series if interested 🤗

From Rivers diary, she tells 10 at the library "the last time I saw you, you showed up at my doorstep, with a haircut and a brand new suit. You took me to the singing towers on Dellirium. The towers sang and you cried. I guess you knew it was my time to go to the library." Love this xmas special and ending to Rivers story. Love 12 and River together.

I imagine they use 'galactic standard' years or something on Darillium. Those usually match Earth years in sci-fi. 🤣

I think this is one of those stories where the ending makes up for the rest of the episode not being great.

I agree with you about the ending being the best part of the episode. The first half is just overly silly and ridiculous. And it's not even the good kind of silly or ridiculous. It's more of the obnoxious kind of silly. The ending is definitely the highlight.
