I love the dialogue between Davros and the Doctor in these two episodes. In classic who, Davros is portrayed just as a mad scientist who was trying to win a war so he created the Daleks, its never fully explained why he was nuts though.

Hey Brandon, nice reaction to the beginning of Series 9, my fav of Capaldi's run, and with Clara and Missy as well. Now that’s too much fun. As far as Davros is concerned, if you recall he hasn't controlled the Daleks for a while now. Remember series 4 two-part finale with Ten? He and Rose surrendered to the Daleks (along with Donna and Captain Jack) and Davros was verbally tormenting Ten in the basement. Or the Vault as the Daleks called it, when Ten made the realization of what was really happening to, as the Daleks call him, “the creator of us all”: DOCTOR: No, no, no, no, no. We're not doing the nostalgia tour. I want to know what's happening right here, right now, because the Supreme Dalek said Vault, yeah? As in dungeon, cellar, prison. You're not in charge of the Daleks, are you? They've got you locked away down here in the basement like, what, a servant? Slave? Court jester? DAVROS: We have an arrangement. DOCTOR: No, no, no, no, no. No, I've got the word. You're the Dalek's pet! No, Davros is not in charge of the Daleks. They think independent of him and only keep him because he still is “the creator of us all”. Looking forward to seeing the part 2 reaction. Laters ....

Big Finish have apparently explored Davros' motivations at great length; but if you ever go back to reacting to Classic Who,I would strongly recommend "Genesis of the Daleks" - which tells the story of how and why he created them in the first place. Trivia: the actor who played Colony Sarf was on roller skates (hidden by his cloak),in order to achieve the creepy gliding effect.

The Big Finish series "I, Davros" is a masterpiece and provides a great origin story for him - https://www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/i-davros-the-complete-series-2299. And yes, I agree that if you ever explore Classic Who, then Genesis of the Daleks is essential viewing. You actually got a glimpse of it here with the snippet of the 4th Doctor, and it has the added bonus of having Sarah Jane Smith as the companion.

I really did not like this episode on first watch, but I've mellowed to it a bit. It's a lot of Moffat-style waffling. The planes thing didn't really matter and it felt like they were throwing things at the wall for like 60% of the episode. I've mellowed to it a bit though, but it's hard not to roll my eyes at some parts. There are still some good scenes in here and the dialogue is still pretty good.

This episode is a bit too sprawling and messy for me. Not terrible, just a bit all over the place with too many ideas. Michelle Gomez really is fucking amazing as Missy - every line she turns in a really interesting way. You see a quick clip of Tom Baker as the 4th Doctor in this episode from one of the most famous scenes of classic Doctor Who ever.
