Mate, some things you just do not need to think to deeply about, or look for deeper meanings in! Just go with the flow 😉! This is one of those silly little romps - a bit of enjoyable light relief, and little more. The Paternoster gang (M Vastra, Jenny and Strax) are indeed fan favourites, mainly because they are so absurd and out of place. They even have heir own spinoff audio series with Big Finish! So while there's not a lot to chew on with this story, there are some nice nods to the past. The Doctor's comment about trying to get "a gobby Australian to Heathrow" is a reference to the 5th Doctor's companion Tegan (to whom he would say "Brave heart, Tegan" to lift her spirits). And Jenny's leather cat suit fight scene is a nod to Diana Rigg's role as the redoubtable Mrs Peel in tbe 60s spy thriller series The Avengers (seriously recommend you look up clips of her in that role on YouTube- my God she was gorgeous, and well ahead of her time!). By the way, Aida was played by Diana Rigg's real life daughter Rachael Stirling.

I’ve seen The Avengers with Diana Rigg. Also I rarely go with the flow as you’ve probably noticed in all my reactions and probably won’t be going with the flow anytime soon😂 Deeper meanings are needed for my enjoyment 🤷🏽‍♂️. Also going with the flow doesn’t mean not having an opinion or not asking questions. I asked many questions during this reaction because I genuinely didn’t know what was going on. I’d love some answers other than it was fun😁

Yeah i think this is one of those episodes that started as a good idea but the final product wasnt good 😅 the mystery of it was handled pretty well but.. just some things make no sense.. like the glass clara was in was supposed to protect her from the apocolypse yet the doctor was able to easily break it with a chair, how did Mrs Gillyflower afford to build all this as we really never found out who she was or how she had so much money to build a factory 😂 probably my least favourite episode of season 7. Series 7 as a whole is one of the low points in new who imo. But dont worry, the last few episodes of Matt Smith really do pick up to say the least.

[Re-posted in chunks (each one replying to the other) as my post ended up disappearing as it was too long or something!] Sorry if I repeat myself with this post, I'm trying to answer questions as you ask them in your video. I think this Sweetville place is a reference to 19th century Bradford businessman philanthropist Titus Salt, who had a village built for his mill workers called Saltaire, which was much better than the Bradford slums of the time. EDIT - There was another one built as well called Akroydon built by Edward Akroyd. Awh, you don't like Jenny and Madame Vastra? Strax is hilarious. :D I love how 'Yorkshire' this episode is. The Crimson 'Orror. :D "This'll put ya right off yer mash." :D

I believe people are preserved by this process for revival after the apocalypse Mrs Gillyflower is planning. Ordinarily, they are either successfully preserved or they die. Neither applied to the Doctor! I think the reason why the preservation process goes wrong for some people is just a random biological thing. Maybe Mr Sweet know, but he ain't telling because he's some weird little red creature. That Thomas Thomas kid is just a silly GPS joke. :D He talks like a satnav, and Thomas Thomas is a reference to TomTom, the GPS manufacturer. Well, it made me laugh, as did "Horse! You have failed in your mission!" "Sontar-ha! Ha ha ha ha!" "I'll go and play with my grenades..." This is just your typical 'take over the world by wiping everybody else out' supervillain plain.

There are some entertaining ideas here; but,for me,it feels like the obligatory "we must give Mark Gatis something to write, because he's an old pal" episode.

Having studied a little of the utopian movements that were flourishing at that time, particularly in the North - I absolutely loved this episode. I am also a fan of old horror movies and they caught a lot of the tone just right for me. And, I will always get a laugh out of Strax wanting to go armed to the teeth because they were going 'to the North' - :p Btw - I live about a 20 minute drive from Bradford.

Trivia: Young Ada was played by actress Rachel Stirling who is also the daughter of Diana Riggs, who of course was our lovely Mrs Gillyflower in this episode (eeesh).

Evan!!

This one is a comfort episode for me, it's just a lot of fun and weird. Originally Moffat was supposed to write this episode, but his hands were tied with getting the 50th together (a very noticeable theme with this season; he was not able to do his usual quality control for this season because of all the work it took for him to do the 50th, the quality suffers greatly), he handed it off to Mark Gatiss who wrote the Moffatiest Gatiss story ever. I truly adore it.

Samuel Coghlan-White

Yeah I agree, The doctor goes from not kissing anyone to kissing three people in one episode

You enjoyed every episode up until Journey to the Center of the TARDIS, right? It's just in the nature of the show to have fillers, that's how it started out because at its core it's a "kids" show (I say that loosely). Kids tend to not be into episodes that are all heavily connected to one another, and it would probably lose more casual viewers. But I see your point... Moffat did confess that he was more focused on the big 50th anniversary special (that aired about 6 months after the end of series 7b) so he neglected these episodes a little.

Will

To be honest, the second half of season 7 isn't that great (though I personally really like the 'strange' ones - this one and 'Hide'. There is the 50th anniversary special coming up though, and many people think that one is a classic and a 'late in his era' high for Matt Smith's Doctor. Fingers crossed that you do too, but obviously no guarantees. 😀

There are very few episodes that I loathe, and this is one of them. And that’s saying something as Matt is my Doctor, I love Vastra and Co, and Diana Rigg. A lot of people do really like it, though, mostly those who are into horror. Gattis loves horror, and he’s practically giddy over this one. It’s just not my style, and he writes Matt just way too silly, I didn’t watch your reaction, simply because I could not bear to do it, lol. I adore the Season finale, and the 50th Anniversary really is awesome!

I think the run of Hide/Cold War/Centre of TARDIS/Crimson/Nightmare is probably the weakest overall 5 episode stretch in the history of New Who. Well certainly to this point - there is maybe an era a bit later that trumps it... So no, don't worry, you're not in trouble for not liking this one. :D I definitely prefer this to Cold War and the next episode. But that's about it. (Luckily the episodes that follow are pretty great).

Daryl

Any time I ask myself what is this episode? I pause and remind myself that at this point and during many others the show loves to cling to the absurd. But not necessarily forever. The show goes through different phases and varrying styles. I can't really articulate how I feel about this episode in particular. But I will say that it definitely isn't the best the show has had to offer story wise. But I do enjoy the irreverence. If I wasn't able to fall into the spirit of that so easily then my enjoyment definitely would be more affected I think.

You asked us for our honest opinions on this story so I have to be blunt. This episode is garbage. Remember when I told you that this was my least favourite series of Doctor Who? Yeah, these stretch of stories are one the reasons why I really don't like this series. A Town Called Mercy and Snowmen are the only episodes I genuinely in this series. I've never been a huge fan of Mark Gatiss stories for Doctor Who as they're usually either boring or bloated (with the exception of The Unquiet Dead) but this one is just very convoluted and all over the place. I'm not a fan of Strax, Jenny or Vastra either. Strax is just more annoying than funny. These episodes also made me really develop a strong dislike for Matt Smith's Doctor with the way he's written and how he's become very annoying and cartoony. Him also kissing Jenny like that is a bit yikes too. I can't say the next two episodes are any better either. I really dislike the next episode you're about to watch but maybe you'll like them. Or maybe not. I'm more looking forward to seeing you react to the 50th anniversary. You're getting closer now. Ada was really the only thing I liked about this episode. Originally when I first saw this, I considered it to be a guilty pleasure but I like it a lot less on more rewatches. But I look forward to seeing your Classic reactions as well as the build up to the 50th.
