Ah, my friend, prepare to be traumatised! This is Peak Torchwood - absolutely brilliant television. Its a single story mini series, originally broadcast over 5 consecutive days, Not sure if you recognised the actor playing Frobisher (Peter Capaldi), but he was the father in The Fires of Pompeii in DW series 4 (and you may well see him again soon in DW 😉). The government department he's in is not MI6 (which is a spy agency), but more likely high level civil service, such as Dept of Prime Minister and Cabinet. Everything about this season is perfection - story, performances, direction. The stakes are higher than ever, and it is utterly compelling. You are in for one he'll of a ride!

You want intense Torchwood? This is the season for you :)

Interesting when this was televised it was shown 1 episode every day for a week which probably added to the intensity of it all. I believe it was shorter because they wanted to tell a single 5 episode long story rather than going back to the old format or stretching it longer than it was meant to be. But honestly I think this season is one of the best pieces of television ever made so I hope you enjoy it

Best series of Torchwood by far! Heck this might arguably be the best thing to come out of the Doctor Who universe! Enjoy this series. You're in for a real ride. Such a gripping and intense first episode. It definitely has a more intense and mature feel here and that's mainly due to RTD fully taking over. The reason why this is only five episodes is due to Torchwood moving to a different channel (throughout the 3 series, Torchwood aired on different channels). First season of Torchwood aired on BBC Three. The second series aired on BBC Two and this third series aired and moved to BBC One since it was popular. However the BBC cut down the series to 5 episodes as that was the only way to get the show onto BBC One. John Barrowman said that this felt like a punishment because other TV shows never got this treatment. But Russell liked the idea and found a way to make it work and its easily the best season of Torchwood. Very curious to see what you make of the remaining episodes. This aired in 2009 which was basically the gap year for Doctor Who as we only had the Tennant specials spread throughout the year (in preparation for the transition from Tennant and RTD to Moffat and Matt Smith) so the spin offs mainly carried 2009 for Doctor Who content. But it was clear that there were also severe budget cuts which could possibly be another reason for Torchwood being cut down as I know SJA's third series was heavily affected by this. It's nice to see expansion upon Ianto and Jack's families. Gwen was also great as ever. Martha was mentioned being on her honeymoon as Freema was sadly unavailable. Russell actually had this plan for Martha and Mickey to appear in this series (and SJA) to extend their presence in the Doctor Who world but both actors were unavailable due to other commitments sadly. I remember watching this in 2009 with my sister during its broadcast (I was only a kid) but it was so freaky seeing the kids freeze and speak in unison). Colonel Mace was also mentioned in this episode with him being in Vancouver (same UNIT solider that appeared in the doctor who sontaran two parter). I just recently finished seeing another reactor watch this so I'm excited to see you finally reach this.
