I think they killed Estelle because she may have been getting too close to expose them, like you said, or they were just having 'fun' messing with Jack, as he encountered them before.

My, you can be a bit harsh on people! 😀 I actually feel really sorry for the mother. Yes, she likely had a poor choice in her partner, but she really tried to connect with her daughter, and then loses both in one day. As for Estelle, I think her fate demonstrates how fairies really are capricious and can't be trusted. Get too close and you get burned (ordained, as the case may be). Your comparison of the Doctor and Jack are quite valid and demonstrate how Jack is so much more human than the Doctor. But equally, the Doctor would never have let a child be taken away and "sacrificed" in that way - he would have found some way around the situation. Jack's humanity makes him much more fallible in that sense. Really enjoying your reactions to Torchwood. The episodes are a bit patchy in the first season, but as others have said, they improve markedly as time goes on.
