Reminded me of Corona. Hostess was health care workers, I guess the professor would be trump

otherboy

Haha yes omg! Except I think the professor had some remorse and a heart. Two things I’m not so sure Trump has😂

John Smith

Another great episode and reaction! It's amazing how they manage to pull off such a tense and scary atmosphere in such a small set. The whole episode was basically filmed in that one room. Can't wait for the next 3!

Very stressful episode, but so well written. Really enjoy it, despite the high anxiety caused from watching, lmao

Stuck at work so will watch when I get home. I could write pages as to why this is one of my favourite, if not THE favourite, episode in the history of the show. As with the best of RTD's work, this episode is so mutli-layered. What happens when the Doctor does not have a companion as a go-between, he becomes completely out if his depth. Take a small group of everyday humans that quickly become the wrong small group of humans to be stuck with. This Doctor's arrogant swagger bites him on the backside. "BECAUSE I'M CLEVER!" Genius from RTD

Excellent episode! I'm so glad you were hooked. I loved your reaction. The amount of tension, the build up and claustrophobic nature makes this episode so gripping to watch. The realistic reactions from the passengers when the fear and hysteria taking them over is scary but fascinating to watch. I also loved the Doctor being helpless which made it even more tense. The way the passengers quickly turned on him which resulted in his life being on the line was so stressful and intense. I also love how the thing that caused this remains a mystery which makes it even scarier. The Hostess saved the day in the end but its so sad that they never knew her name. So excited to see your reaction for the remaining episodes. :D

Glad you really liked it. I imagine you'll like the next equally.

A truly amazing episode - one of the very best! The most terrifying creatures in the universe is a group of trapped and frightened humans. Incidentally, the actor playing the Professor is David Troughton, son of Patrick Troughton who was the 2nd Doctor from 1966 to 1969. David Troughton has also appeared in Doctor Who before in the early 1970s as a teenager, playing the Prince of the planet Paledon opposite the 3rd Doctor.

One of my favorite episodes of the entire series! Most of the episode took place on that one set, but it was still so riveting. At times it was hard to tell who was scarier the people, or that unknown "thing". If you are interested there is a Youtube video titled "How Sky's Lines Were Filmed - Doctor Who Confidential" that gives you a glimpse into how this episode was filmed.

Samuel Coghlan-White

To me I see the humans as the monsters in this episode

Ian Smith

My favourite 10th Doctor story. It just shows that you can put together a rivetting, gripping episode without needing action and OTT special effects. Dr Who has often been at its best when budget restrictions forced the writers to be creative.

How many sci-fi stories would think to have the hostess say, “Ladies and gentlemen and variations thereupon”? Or that Sky was separated from her girlfriend? No accident the woman who SELFLESSLY sacrificed herself was never named, which the writer called to our attention in case we missed it. These touches brilliantly highlighted the theme of individuality and diversity versus mimicry and loss of identity. Also, the extreme stress and anxiety of the Doctor’s experience was intensified by contrast with Donna’s peaceful, soothing spa treatment. On a separate note, why was Rose on the video screen? “Molto bene!”

Daryl

Probably the best locked room episode I have ever seen. Hands down this goes into my top 10 of episodes. I'd go as far as to say this is genius, and that word gets thrown around too much. You nailed perfectly why it is so brilliant. I'm with you, you can keep the special effects so as long as the the writing and acting is this stellar. I don't think she needed to die. Your right. But from a writing stand point. I think this way plays better for the narrative. She then becomes the best of us in self sacrificing herself when the room had gone so dark and negative. These people are the worst of humanity in those moments.

otherboy

Yeah I noticed the hostess saying “and variations there upon” when I was editing and thought that was awesome.

otherboy

Yeah I hate that they all became so aggressive and hateful, but I think most people would act the same way in a crisis and let the fear take over. But I also wonder if the alien had some sort of supernatural influence on their moods as well. Some kind of reflective power reflecting their fear back at them since it lived in a crystal world.

Will

This is why you shouldn't talk to your fellow passengers. ;)

When they were fighting amongst themselves it reminded me of all the videos of people fighting for toilet paper during Lock down. I don't mean that as a joke, in bar work I've seen people turn hostile in a split second with no way to talk them down. The moment the Doctor shouts, "..because I'm Clever!....", he gives a great look as if to say, "That was probably the worse thing i could have said right now." No Tardis, Screwdriver or Donna could save him, and while normally his Intellect can save the day it ended up nearly being his downfall.

Well, watching this episode usually lowers my faith in humanity, as does the news most days.., but seeing your emphatic, emotionally intelligent response gains it back twofold 😊 So thank you for that. Also, I think I heard you say in a Torchwood reaction, you were born in -87? You look younger..I was born in April that year and I’m already going gray 😄

Mark Ward

I LOVED your reaction to this. I wasn't sure what you'd think, because I know how much you love Donna and worried you might miss her, but then I realised it's such a story of human emotions and actions that I should have known you'd like it. Not knowing the Hostess's name is so important I think - it just makes me sink completely when they say that. I do like this episode a lot. But I actually prefer the next one (and I have a feeling you will love it too - I really hope so)... that's how good the second half of this season is...!

otherboy

Haha yeah I’ll be 33 in June! Yeah I got a couple white hairs too😂😭

Ughhhh this episode is so good... I remember watching it when it aired in 2008, when I was 7, and I sort of found it boring because it only had one main, closed location and there was no companion. But as I've grown (I'm 19 now) and rewatched it so many times, it's literally one of the best episodes of the show. So scary, tense and the acting is STELLAR. So excited for episode 11 :)

I just caught up to all your episodes. Watched most of them on YouTube and then switched to Patreon during Series 4. This is such a great episode, in that I think the monster was humanity. Lord, they went off the rails so hard. And their insane reactions were a bit over the top in some places, but I think that was intentional just to bring the point home. Personally, when I’m frightened I don’t go all homicidal like these folks did. I would be more likely to sit in the corner and shut down completely. Also, someone else mentioned that without his companion, The Doctor comes off as arrogant and a bit out there. To add to that, this entire thing would have been over in exactly 4 seconds if Donna had been there. The humans would start freaking out and she would be all “Hey, this guy is a bit of a dick but he’s brilliant and I trust him so let’s do what he says.” And they would. Interestingly, as much as he looks like a human and is charming and gorgeous with his hair and suit and converse, The Doctor is not human and doesn’t really ever fully grasp what it is to be human, as much as he loves humanity. Outside of the actual plot, The Doctor’s companions serve another very important purpose production-wise. They are the audience surrogates. They are ordinary humans who ask the questions that we as audience members need answers to. The Doctor is so genius that he would never go on these expositional monologues if everyone around him understood what was going on. There always has to be one person in the room who asks the questions. Why is this happening? Who are these aliens? Why did he just say that? That the job of the audience surrogate. They ask the questions that we as viewers need answers to in order to understand what’s happening. And he didn’t have his audience surrogate in this episode. All he had were a bunch of stressed out, paranoid people who didn’t know him.

Melinda Barr

I also found the Doctor's solution disturbing. His desire to bring it back was reckless and tainted by his curiosity.

Josh B

Hey Other Boy. Just wondering when the next reaction is coming out?

otherboy

Oh wow that BTS footage was cool to see thanks. One of my favorite episodes😄

Idun V

This is one of my favorite episodes on television of all time, it always leaves me shaking and in need of a breather. It's terrifying how real this is to how humans act when they're angry, afraid or they meet something they don't understand.
