Yeah, this movie wasn’t meant to have some kind of underlying inspirational message or meaningful “coming of age” plot. It was pretty much just a funny, nostalgic glimpse into life into teen life in the 70’s. Just getting high and partying mostly. And upperclassmen hazing underclassmen was just a part of life back then. No one really took it seriously and did anything to try to stop it. It was just a right of passage. It was set in Austin, TX, btw, not a small town. Austin’s a cool city with a great music and arts scene (I’ve been there) but almost everywhere would have been boring for teenagers back then. It’s just a teenager’ plight to complain about being bored no matter where they are or how much there actually is to do.

Yeah but that boredom doesn’t usually include the constant abuse of other children. Very disturbing as was Matthew McConaughey’s character.

Ben Affleck’s character was the biggest dick, but it was a breakthrough role for him, and he did show some serious acting chops. More so than Matthew McConaughey’s character, who was just comic relief as the creepy older loser who hung around high school kids trying to cling to his glory days. It was meant to be pathetic but he was good at representing that type of person. All sort of different types from different cliques were represented in this movie and I liked that.
