Daryl

They did explain her connection to the previous character she played. When she said she had a cousin that died at Canary Wharf. Which is where Torchwood tower is. The Doctor then said he was there. It is subtle but it's an acknowledge and move on moment. Adeola was a one off part but they liked Freema so asked her back to play a Martha.

otherboy

Oh wow I didn’t realize what Canary Wharf was! But a cousin who looks identical? 😂

Happy New Year and welcome to series three! I think you will enjoy Miss Martha Jones and watching as the Doctor attempts to move on from the losses of the previous series. There are a few great episodes in Three and I’m very excited for you to get a chance to experience them. btw: Wasn’t sure if you were aware of composer Murray Gold, who writes all of Doctor Who original music. He has theme’s for all the Doctors and companions and one of my favorites is Martha’s. Here’s a sample of “Martha’s Theme”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REwOudgPQTI

Happy New Year and welcome back. I think you'll like this season - it's a bit of a step up on the previous two, and includes a couple of stories regarded as amongst the show's best. Martha is a good companion - intelligent and resourceful. DW does have a bit of a history re-casting actors from time to time, especially in Classic Who. In the 1980s they even cast an actor who had a role as a minor villain in one story and gave him the role of the Doctor a year or so later!

otherboy

Happy New Year! Yeah I’m used to the reusing of actors as I’m a huge Buffy fan. Should be fun!😄

You got to witness your first Companion entering the Tardis with context of what the Tardis is, the "Bigger on the Inside" Moment. Also i think they had The Doctor establish that he isnt looking for a relationship to keep in tradition with the Doctor and his Companions, its nothing romantic, purley platonic. Companions are essentially narrative devices, there to be reactionary and ask the questions that the Doctor can explain what is happening, much like Watson in Sherlock Holmes.

otherboy

Yeah it’s always bittersweet because it’s probably better that the Doctor not get involved with his companions but at the same time I’d like to see him in a romantic relationship of some kind.

Mark Ward

I disagree re: the companions in New Who - they have a lot more to them than the narrative device that you are talking about. I have seen Martha's episodes a lot more over the last few years - I did not take to her at all back when I first saw her but these days I like her a great deal more.

Other Boy - have you never watched Black Mirror. Gugu Mbatha-Raw has a lead role in one of the most acclaimed episodes of that show.

otherboy

I’ve only seen part of the first episode when everyone is stuck in a computer game but I’d like to continue it at some point😄

Mark Ward

Um... not even sure which episode that you're referring to...!? That's definitely not the first episode though! Black Mirror is astonishing tv at times and I think you'd love Mbatha-Raw's performance in her episode.

they are absolutely developed characters, but that IS there narrative purpose to question and react to further the story. Every piece of fiction follows a similar structure of characters: Protagonist, Antagonist, Confidant, Dynamic, Foil ect. Companions are the Confidant to the Doctors Protagonist. Someone for the Doctor to confide in, share ideas, and reflect their personality with. sorry If it felt like i was saying they are not important, quite the opposite, without them the show wouldn't work.
