I suggest you read the lyrics but it is a song that questions authority and people ideological inconsistencies when it comes to religion.

Thank you and i'm glad you like it. Yeah the lyrics are very important and the hypocrisy and the face behind the mask are themes that often come up in Oingo Boingo. Just a few little info to complete, Insanity is the opening song of this concert, Farewell, the last one before the separation of the group, a concert of almost 3 hours, and if you want, just to discover without necessarily making a video reaction, you have several other extracts on youtube, notably later in the concert with the brass section (yes in addition to all the rest). There are also several good songs available on youtube, I particularly like Island for its atmosphere and its "jazzy" solo. Oingo Boingo broke up in 1995, after 15 years together, but I still find their music so effective and find it unfortunate that few people today know.

oingo boingo is a really unique band. For some reason their stuff always me of like a dia de los muertos vibe. Also you probably got the movie esque vibe because danny elfman founded this band ( if the name isn't familiar danny elfman did the soundtrack for pretty much every tim burton movie . Also the simpsons theme )

The lyrics are really interesting.I expected it to be a critique of hypocrisy in religion but I'm getting more of a vibe that its about a weird blending in some religions (catholicism comes to mind) of a sacred elite holier than though attitude but also a profane guilt and disgust that leads to almost a penance seeking ritual self flaggulation for ones own sins and the sins of mankind. Later it gets a bit more into a classic critique of religious hypocracy but the angle it comes at from the beginning of religion (not religion as a whole, when people critisize religion they tend to just be referring to the large scale world altering politics of religion- particularly a politically manipulative subset of organized christianity and the use of religion as a political tool or weapon. And I believe that when people criticize religion globally as insanity while referring to certain political behaviors of certain subsets of christianity at certain periods in history they abandon practices of attempting cultural relativity which is necessary even when we are judging western culture and white people's culture.) as something that encourages both self flaggulation and self righteousness makes all the difference. Religion isn't framed as just some belief system used to control the masses, but as a tool that can be used by claiming those on top are morally pure when those on the bottom are unclean and can only be absolved by following the orders of those at the top. Adding that layer of absolution seeking and sacred and profanity brings a really unique take to the issue. Also yes evangelicalism is a word. It gets thrown around a lot and is kind of percieved as being another word for christianity or a subset of protestant christianity. But actually it means the practice of evangelizing- not only believing in your own religion but believing that everybody else needs to believe it too in order to attain salvation, and the subsequent effort to convert the rest of the world to that belief system.

I think a take of a saying religion is a tool is the most nuanced way of looking at the subject matter. And the cultural dialogue often focuses on the excesses , the corruption and the perversion of the church, because I believe that the media thinks it is a sensational story that will drive traffic, and drive ad reveune dollars to there websites etc. Because the church going great things isn't a story to many in the media, not all but many!
