Galadriel threatening to torture and kill the orcs is very...... Noldor of her to do lol - definitely the more violent group of elves.

Tolkien had a lot of emphasis on the four kinds of love, one of them being Philae. This is mostly used in context of strong brotherly / sisterly bonds of love that go extremely deep. This kind of love is often formed through shared trauma like battle - it's camaraderie among soldiers. CS Lewis called this love "the happiest and most fully human of all loves; the crown of life and the school of virtue". I think this is the sort of bond we're seeing form between Galadriel and Halbrand, for better or worse.

Also - I definitely think it's possible for them to survive the wall of ash. While there is a little bit of fire in there, I think it's mostly smoke and ash. Also if not - it's just a suspension of disbelief. There's no way Sam and Frodo should have survived that last volcano scene in RotK movie. As for Adar sounding convincing, that's the point. The evil in this world is cunning, convincing, and alluring. Annatar (Sauron) successfully convinces even most of the elves that he has good intentions. The idea of creating a world of "perfect order" and home for the orcs would mean something totally different for everyone else. They would seek to blot out the sun and cover the world in darkness. It would destroy and decay all living things. It's the things we see fortold time and time again throughout the history of Arda. And it's something Adar eluded to in the previous episode when he was basking in the sunlight.

JLee

Adar gets the sword, walks out as the Numenoreans are riding in and says to Waldrig, "I have a task for you." That's the hand off. Galadriel and Halbrand don't check it bc they have no idea what it's supposed to be. What I realized in this watch through is that Theo checks it because as he's holding it, he realizes he doesn't feel that power from before.

JLee

Adar is such an interesting antagonist. The striving for orcs to be seen as children of Iluvatar is a fascinating motivation.

Instead of "past the planetary blockade", you could use "past the Eye of Sauron" or maybe "past the Black Gates of Mordor"... 🤔

Adar's arguments seem reasonable enough - which as Aidan Pullen and JLee say, is what makes him a compelling antagonist - until you realize his plan involves blotting out the sun and covering the world in darkness. 😲 Also, I am surprised you guys missed it, but from the first time they showed the town in Episode 1, the camera has always lingered on the giant mountain behind it, which combined with the fact that "the Southlands" are located in the same place in the map as "future Mordor", made it very clear what that mountain would become. Still, it was awesome to see it happen, and to understand why the orcs had been digging all those tunnels. 👍👍👍

Caught it again on the rewatch, also the fact that when Arondir walks away from Bronwyn to go to stash it we see Theo in the background paying close attention

Oh I had seen/identified Mt Doom a few episodes ago, but hadn't made the connection between the sword/lake/eruption at ALL

I think that's 100% right, Philae is totally the bond between Galadriel and Halbrand right now. In a way he fills that empty space where Finrod used to be, since he also was brave and noble in her eyes. It's going to be emotionally devastating for her if he turns out to be Sauron on top of this

Calu

Ah, okay, I might have missed that, apologies... I think that sword/lake/eruption connection was such a huge surprise, and is what made that scene so cool and unexpected!

After the filming Hera told me "I want to go on a splash mountain ride where you just get dumped into a pit of lava and then erupt out a volcano"
