its true, 001 was exaggerating his injuries for the sake of letting them think hes weaker than he actually is. he may have done something rash, but he wasnt dumb. so 001 was thinking longterm even during the abuse, or else hell go crazy from the humiliation.  001 had a lot of pride, but he had to throw it away, as rationally, this was the best option for all parties. 

by the way, when 002 saw this scene of 001 getting punished, he was rattled pretty badly, and that included looking at guns. they scared him alot after that. but one of the ways the numbers are trained and even tested on is ammunition tolerance.

after 002's fledgling days are over, he is tested alot, all types of tests but he was also going to be tested on how well he endures being shot at. this obviously scared him to high water. like why is he being punished. what did he do? he started to panic and even shed tears. he was told to strip and be prepared. of course it took some coaxing from his caretaker/handler. (in order to save on the clothes the numbers wear, which are highly durable specialized frabric, meant to withstand tearing, and high levels of stress, they tell the numbers to take them off when it comes to specifically things like ammunition and destructive testing. they cant be replacing them every time it gets eviscerated. they do have spares later on for the missions and all, but they dont want to waste such resources only in the testing/training phase)) (its practical but morally rude, since its also taking away their privacy)

when 002 was shot through many different rounds, each stronger than the next. 002 was shielding himself out of reflex, but quickly realized that it didnt hurt at all. he was still scared, shaking and crying, but he was also largely confused. his handler tried to comfort him, but it was null. 'why did you let this happen to me' is his thoughts and 'i didnt want this, why do i have to do this?" "why me?" those same questions. 

the rounds got worse, soon using experimental, number specific designed weapons, meant to inflict damage to them. things like tazing capability, barbed bullets, things like that. those did sting, especially the taser types. then the heavy fire. those are the landmines, bombs, and tanks that 002 eventually was faced with. this was traumatizing for sure. it hurt alot more than the previous things. this is what he fears, and believes what 001 was being attacked with. 

he healed just as fast as he was getting damage, but the pain was always there. in a way, they were forcing him to be pain tolerant rather than developing something like stronger skin. he was already strong enough for that. especially the mines and close range tanks hurt the most, as those sometimes leaves a huge injury, which actually takes longer to heal than the time it was inflicted. 002 had to brace and hold his tears less he fears they will do this to him outside of 'training/ testing' 

001 went through this too, but with less emotion, as at the time, he was so loyal that the pain wasn't enough to make him cry as much. 002 already felt insubordinate due to the punishment he saw. like he wanted to runaway and desert the place, but soon realized it was immediately hopeless after a year. so he performed to perfection, bracing for the pain, and standing 'unfazed' for the high expectations placed on him by the humans, any type of dignity he held was ready to be thrown away for the sake of perfection, less any worse and he'll fear the worst.
