from one of the requests! il make a small series on the mythical dryads. with some modification and a broader outlook for this project. if you have any thoughts on expanding or incorporating some things, please let me know! id love to add all your big brains into this short fantasy series.

thoughts-

these forest fae like humanoids will be based off of tree and plant species, and the first test of concept will be sugar maple! ill be detailing their IRL counterparts from their bark, leaves, and of course the maple syrup lol.

different types of trees in different forests or regions will of course have their own cultures and even outfits. all this is in the experimental phase, with trying to set parameters on the scope of the world of plant people.

the common conception of dryads are nymphs inhabiting a forest, largely in a oak tree but now in all forms of wood or greenery, with of course, different interpretations from the original source and in future renditions/adaptions.

tree spirits essentially. somewhat divine with long life and some abilities. i want these spirits to inhabit the forms they come into contact with depending on region and over the millennia, have been inundated whole from the chosen IRL counterparts.

this in part, to make these spirits have some form of logic or groundedness in a historical/social ((what habits, technologies, fashions, and types of behavior they'll exhibit based on region and plant tendencies))  standpoint as well as especially from an evolutionary look.

my First thought of the dryad when I saw it was "rascal" 💀 This is going to be so much fun especially with the fact that trees love to talk to each other (dryiads must be such gossipers haha) and I am also thinking of the Pando Aspen Tree (the one tree forest <3) which looks like a forest of trees but is actually one organism/ (!) and how that would translate into the world of dryiads :D Also them using the Dryad's Saddle to travel/as a vantage point is quite interesting to imagine as I often have trouble imagining the scale of many creatures

Ooh what do you mean by dryads saddle to travel/vantage point? A cursory search tells me it’s an edible fungus that grows on trees :o. And the huge singular tree could be a specialized hive mind of dryads! Supper cool

iirc the fungus is named dryads (greek mythology variant) saddle because they're fabled to be used by dryads as a ride or a protective vantage point! I also saw someone note that it's called that as sometimes the cap can look like a horses saddle as well but I don't really see many references of that example tbh. They vary in size based on photos so it's cute to imagine a really tiny dryad and then a much bigger one that practically dwarfs the first ^^ Edit: Although the idea is that they can get so big that a dryad is able to ride them but tiny dryads sound too cute to not imagine
