It’s an interesting read and I think I understand what they’re trying to say/do in that as you’ve said, the rules are there to keep things civilised out in the wilds but in the comforts of your own play groups there isn’t someone standing over you yelling no your not allowed to do XYZ , commander was intended as a casual format and as such should be played casually within your play groups and if you feel that’s just as the rules/suggestions state the awesome if you want to go with your own house rules then that’s fine too, but if your going out and playing in unfamiliar settings it’s nice to have a framework set of rules to abide by to keep a level playing field. To the bans list ect, I don’t like pay to win games be it on a console, pc or mtg in saying that I feel like what prof said about making your power level known and self regulation should be enough to not really need a bans list. I play a nekusar deck and on many occasions just not played out my static orb or other super oppressive combos because it wasn’t that sort of game and it’s better to do our best to maintain the fun. Any way I’m going on a bit, good episode #iwanttowinthesignedcards

One thing that was really nice to see today on twitter was Sheldon actively speaking with big names in cEDH. On that note, onto the content at hand. Personally I really enjoy both casual and competitive EDH play and don’t view them as different things. Honestly I feel a lot of this is a false dichotomy that is carried by both players but even by the RC a little bit. Yes standard and modern are both competitive formats, but that doesn’t mean every deck is the best version of that deck especially at more casual settings like FNM. There are thousands of people who come into their LGSs every week for *fun*, *more casual* games of these competitive formats, the same is true for EDH just opposite. And to that point one of the things that I feel gets overlooked at lot is that it is cEDH that needs an actual ban list. cEDH doesn’t really have much room for rule zero, from deck conception you have to consider that you will sit down with other decks that will pull every trick they can to win before you do and having a hard, shared list of banned cards is important to that. It’s another reason the ‘goal of the ban list’ seems off. If they really want to keep it as a suggestion list then I think they should do a suggested list on top of the hard banned list. Have a ban list for cards that simply and truly are just too powerful: Time Walk, the Moxes, etc, as well as cards that heavily and negatively effect competitive play and aren’t seen in casual play at all like Flash. Cards that should be exempted from rule zero off of the kitchen table, though obviously are not due to the nature of rule zero. And then additionally is the suggested list, essentially what a lot of the current ban list is supposed to be according to the philosophy document. And this would be a sensible place for cards like Paradox Engine and Iona, a list of cards the RC feels can make casual play a huge feel bad and should be avoided but as long as your table says ok you’re 100%. I think that’d be a good way to go but I’m sure someone can find the imperfections in it. Either way I’m honestly mostly hopeful because of that aforementioned conversation between Sheldon and cEDH leaders. Lastly, I do think part of the problem is so many EDH players still struggle with understanding power level and then accurately communicating it at the table. One thing I’ve started to do is add a strip of post it note between sleeve and top-loader of my commanders that includes power level based on Command Zone 1-10 and a three to five word description. Just a few examples: Tasigur 9.5 Razaketh Necro-ooze Taigam 9 Rebound Turns Control K&T of Meletis 6.5 Enchantress Fort-Hugs Primal Surge It’s there on my card, an estimated power level and what I’m doing. It does give some info away which is bad game theory but I’ve seen a noticeable trend for other players to understand what they’re getting themselves into allowing/asking me to play the stronger decks or to avoid what they know they can’t handle and won’t like. Otherwise: Jimmy, have you considered Negeb, Dreadhorde Champion for high optimized/low cEDH? Some aggressive assault with wheels, isn’t quite in line with your typical burn but thought I’d mention it. Thanks guys, was a great vid with good discussion
