Show Notes:

Many cards and effects are contentious in EDH. Armageddon, Stasis, Iona, Scrambleverse…the list is long and varies depending on your playgroup.

On this episode we’re discussing a recent article by Commander Rules Committee member Sheldon Menery and asking the question: Are there cards you shouldn’t play?

So he doesn't like stax... Many of my decks use (some) of those cards. I am a combo player and I need some extra time in order to setup my combo.. I do get targeted a lot --- because of this I need to slow down my opponents (more than I need to parley with them).

Yeah i do play a fair few of these also , it seems fine in my play group as my decks do there own thing and they’re powered down by not running tutors or anything like that so in most cases I’m looking at the 1 in 92 to draw them. It’s like you said it depends on the meta of your play group and in ours totally fine, I think I’ve only mindslavered once despite it being played several times , just a bit of fun to see people’s reactions when the see it

Also - when talking about the rules. I do not approve of the "banned as the commander/99-card" rule. There are a lot of cards which I miss playing in commander - which I would play as the 99 cards but not as the commander. Well guess what, it's banned as commander so now I cannot play it in the 99. No. I love janky decks so it's not just because I love "broken things". I also do not know why cards like Ancestral recall is banned. Sure it's restricted in vintage - but that's just because they COULD play 4 of them if it wasn't. Drawing 3 cards/99 isn't really winning you the game. It is if you play it in synergy with something else. Why is Library of Alexandria banned? Wouldn't Iona be more ban worthy? - (Just because you talked about it in the video and I also "hate" that card) I can understand why I shouldn't play Erayo, Soratami Ascendant as my Commander. But what about playing Jace, Unraveler of Secrets? It doesn't win you the game. And enchantments can be removed. Arren't Rofellos, Llanowar Emissary just another good elf card? I can understand why it shouldn't be your commander, but I wouldn't keep people from playing them in their deck. Braids, Cabal Minion is a card I am allowed to play in my reanimator deck - It's banned as commander, but besides that it's just another Smokestack. - It's one of my first cards, I cannot play it anywhere else than in commander... It's simply not good enough.

If you play with a card, don't have fun, and can tell that other people aren't having fun either ... take it out. That's my main rule. Vorinclex, Jin Gitaxias, Grand Arbiter (as commander), Triumph of the Hordes, Torment of Hailfire, Eldrazi w/ Annihalator, Paradox Engine, Craterhoof Behemoth, Expropriate ... all of these cards have been in decks and then taken out of decks. Overall, I tend to gravitate away from cards that either a.) make my deck become a linear race or b.) lead to me dicking around for 15 min. while I try to piece together some insane machine of tapping/untapping/sac'ing into enough value to end the game. Disinformation Campaign and the new Niv Mizzet are on my personal watch list. DC because of my Aminatou blink deck just reducing everyone else's hand to rubble but me having to go three more turns to find an actual win-con. The new Niv because two people in my playgroup play the damn thing as a commander, and they just durdle around until one of these four cards come up - Curiosity, Ophidian Eye, Tandem Lookout, Lab Maniac. Sometimes, they get stopped, sometimes they don't, but I feel on edge the whole time like I can never let my guard down, and personally, that's not what I look for in a game of commander.

I agree with a few of these. I'm also very anti easy-combo. I'm more anti tutor than any of these though. Also DJ, you're talking about kiki-jiki/ Splinter twin... which is a great combo, but I think another piece of depth to kiki/splinter twin is that it doesn't enable for example thrasios or breya, which are very very hard to stop. However, Kiki/splinter can be stopped by fog/ arachnogenesis/ crawlspace/ sudden spoiling/ entangler. These are cards that are inexpensive ($$), and have utility w/o only facing combo players. Palinchron is a lot harder to stop the infinite mana issue. You need instant speed land destruction, or split second creature destruction, or something.... IDK it's hard to stop... and if you're against breya.... how do you stop this? No clear/easy solutions for new or budget players. That said, I completely agree that if you don't have instant speed creature removal, or used it on something dumb... losing to seedborn muse seems fair. I also grief tutor users... but also am the only person willing to play against my friends Karador deck that can win on turn 3. Griefing a tutor player is a sort of way to make people nervous and use them incorrectly... Also it's my brother, so I don't feel bad

I think that I might be the "Narset" guy that DJ keeps mentioning from GP Vegas. I played a very strong Narset deck at the GP Vegas Commander Tournament, and would start each match with some version of "This is a well constructed, well tuned Narset deck. Narset isn't a tier 1.0 commander, but this deck is about as good as Narset gets."

i'd change the name of the booster pack game to something closer to like 3 card monte

That's a good idea. Although Wizard's can't embrace gambling, we can. I say bring back Ante for the 3 card pack duel format.
