We're back with a new Game Knights on a brand new set thanks to all of the combined support of our sponsors and Patrons. We are super excited to have been able to fly out Meghan and Maria from Magic the Amateuring to join us in a Limited battle of 2-Headed Giant with the new Ixalan cards!

And yes! We have heard the cries for original Commander decks - we'll be returning to many of those soon in the future, so don't worry :) but we didn't call the show Commander Knights for a reason!

I'm gonna take a minute and stick up for our friends here. Meghan and Maria are people both Jimmy and I know and enjoy hanging out with. I find them to be hilarious and awesome. They were at the top of both of our lists as far as guests we wanted to have on as soon as we had enough budget to fly people in from across the country AND when we were doing an episode that wasn't EDH-centric. Because of the podcast, we have many opportunities to include and interact with people from the Commander community. What is exciting about Game Knights is it gives us the ability to branch out and showcase other facets/formats of Magic that we love (Jimmy and I have played 2HG together many times at GPs and pre-releases, etc) with people the podcast maybe wouldn't have a real good reason to bring on. As we always say, there's a reason we didn't call the show "Commander Knights". As always, I appreciate your (and everyone's) thoughts and criticisms and, above all, your support. I just want you to know where we're coming from. -JLK

I replied on Reddit as well but I don't understand the hate you get for doing non-EDH content. You released a bunch of extra content (mostly EDH) lately and I greatly appreciate it. The Archenemy episode and now this episode are two of my favorites. Keep up the good work. Also, Meghan and Maria were great, I love their podcast and love them on your show. I hope you have them back. - Aaron

While I do want to see your custom creations more, I don't mind the new product every now and then. I think people were just upset it was 4 products in a row (archenemy, anthology, cm2017, and now ixalan release). I know you guys bust all kinds of arse to get high quality content out for FREE. Just please don't pick standard or draft too too much... a lot of the fan base (not me necessarily) is derived from a community that plays more longevity based formats because they don't want their deck to rotate out every month. Thanks for giving us another Game Knights!

Yesss! So happy to finally see you guys battle with MTA. Thank you for the great content, Command Zone!

Hi guys. I just wanted to share a few things, I really apreciate your content, love the podcast and gameknights. I understand that everyone needs to make money to make a living and that it takes a lot of work to produce the quality content you guys make. However, I do feel that of late there has been an excess of focus on sponsors and new product. The last gameknights episode not focused on new product was in April (With Prof and Melissa). I know this is partly because of wizards, but we had Anthology, then archenemy, then C17.. was it necessary to do ixalan too? I worry that Gameknights might be slowly creeping from gameshow to ad. (or maybe its me?) Thanks for another episode! edited for spelling

Howzit Dino! First off, I appreciate your thoughts. Patrons like you are our most ardent supporters and I never take that for granted. I also think you've voiced something that we've heard a lot today so I wanted to address it: I think there’s a disconnect between what the show is (to Jimmy and I) and maybe what some people think it is. Let's take a look at how it's gone so far: *Out of the Box video – the inception of Game Knights (before we had the name) a literal straight CMDR2016 out of the box gameplay video. *Ep1: New four color commanders – a video showcasing the latest and greatest commander cards from the newest set at the time *Ep2: Partner commanders – same as above (though maybe one could say these were “old” by this time I guess?) *Ep3: ok on this one we branched out with some older decks *Ep4: Aether Revolt Commanders – showcasing the newest stuff for players from the latest set *Ep5: Old decks with Prof and Melissa. *Ep6: Amonkhet Commanders – showcasing the newest stuff for players from the latest set *Ep7: Archenemy – new product *Ep8: Commander Anthology – new product *Ep9: CMDR2017 “out of the box” gameplay callback to original episode – new product *Ep10 – Ixalan 2HG – new product By my math there’s only 2 (maybe 3 depending on how you categorize Ep2) episodes that weren’t based around some kind of product release. Out of 11 episodes. Now, people can call us shills or sell-outs or whatever but we started down this path a long time ago (long before we had any sponsors) and for good reason. What can I say? We get excited about new Magic stuff. We want to get our hands on it and show it off to people while it’s still the latest and greatest and before they’ve had a chance to try it themselves. Will we ever do our own decks from older sets again? Of course. But that is not and has never been the main emphasis of the show. Again, I respect your point of view and it's certainly valid. I just push back on the "I know you guys need to make money" thing as if we've somehow intrinsically changed what the show is or compromised our moral standards in an effort to cash-in. Trust me, if money was a determining factor I would never spend the amount of time and effort to create Game Knights in the first place. From an opportunity cost perspective it's a horrendous waste of time. But I'm proud of the show and I love doing it. That's why we make it. All the best -JLK

I am glad that you guys did a two headed giant game and broke down some of the strategies for it. I have only played two headed giant 3 times so I haven't had the time to feel out the strategies or to figure out why the last time we played was a success. That time we built a reactive and a proactive deck and I think that was key. Take any critisism (or praise) with a grain of salt because you guys know what you are doing as you have created high quality content that people enjoy. "If you build it they will come." and they have.

Great episode, I like some of the new ixalan stuff. I’m really thinking of building a tribal Dino deck. Thanks guys

It was disappointing to see such irrelevant content, and even more so to see a Game Knights slot used for an actual advertisement. I know you've acknowledged that this feedback has been consistent, but I hope you don't dismiss it as just the "vocal minority".

commandzone

The use of "#Ad" is a legal requirement when we accept any amount of production budget from WotC. It in no way signifies that the show itself is an "advertisement". The episode was produced with the same love and care as all the others, with a mind towards being entertaining and fun and showcasing all that Magic has to offer. I'm sad that you found it "irrelevant" and hope we can do better with future episodes but I don't think categorizing the show as pure marketing is correct any more than saying that an NBA game is just an advertisement for the game of basketball, etc. -JLK

The show is about showing different ways to play MTG, and you're succeeding in it in a grandiose fashion! Keep up the work, and I believe that the effort you put into each episode of Game Knights and the podcast will show. \^.^/

The recent annoying cards episode was kind of everything this show made me fall in love with. Great conversation. The podcast vibe was strong didn't feel all super produced and loss of focus. It felt like true content even if it was silly. Which may be part of the recent grumbling. For me it's not the "ads" I have a problem with like everyone else. It's that the content doesn't match or keep up. There's no substance or anything significant anymore. Recent deck techs Ramos, Mairsil etc. It felt like rushed and not full of the same detail and knowledge prior. I'm talking about on magic content and knowledge basis. The content has not been keeping up with past videos. It's not like you guys got worse at the game over time. Maybe the focus for the content of the videos has changed? Though there was a time where every video uploaded no matter the topic I learned something or had something about my play style I needed to adjust or just self reflect on life. It was a podcast. Podcasts no matter the content can speak volumes to people who are in touch with the same ideas and philosophies. This podcast and other silly ones have been used by me to get over depression anxiety etc. There seems to be this push away from that here and becoming something different. Your personalities have changed your focus has changed and instead of being two guys I wouldn't be nervous around and excited to talk life and magic with. Now I'm not sure. I don't feel the same connection. It's not the "ads" that bum me out it's what appears to be a complete divide from the content from before.
