Glad you mentioned this because I've been wondering about TV in Japan... Are there any "free" TV channels in Japan that are similar to the over-the-air channels in the US (NBC, CBS, ABC, etc.), or is everything done through some kind of paid subscription service (or a combo of the two)?

It's kind of confusing to be honest. There are (I think?) two systems of over-the-air channels in Japan. One is free and the other I think requires you pay for it. We just get the free ones, it's only like 6 or 7 channels. They also have NHK (which is part of the free ones) that is like Japanese BBC or PBS in the sense that it is funded by the public. But what's weird about it is that you are "required" to pay for it and they send people door-to-door to collect the money for it, so the entire country has just stopped answering their doors for fear it's the NHK guy. hahahahahhaha. -E
