Hello there! In this week's bonus video, we're taking a look at a ~mystery~ surrounding Batman: The Animated Series. Why did they replace Tim Curry with Mark Hamill to play the Joker? Well, that depends on who you ask. Also: how the team behind the show Gargoyles wanted to make their show more like Batman: TAS, and the very smart response of voice director Andrea Romano. We'll delve into the unlikely inspiration for the Joker's maniacal laugh.

AND! If you're a fan of mysteries and Stephen Sondheim, you probably already know that Sondheim wrote a murder-mystery in the 1970s called The Last of Sheila. That movie was one of the primary inspirations for Rian Johnson's film Glass Onion, and this Wednesday (Dec 21) me & my YouTube-neighbor Matt Colville will be getting on a livestream to discuss The Last of Sheila, Sondheim, and the unlikely connection between musicals and mysteries. I hope you'll join us for that over on Twitch! It's happening on Wednesday Dec 21 at 6pm pacific/9pm eastern at twitch.tv/matthew_colville.

I kind of wonder about the alternate universe where Tim curry played the joker. It was interesting learning about the last of Sheila all in all a lot of interesting stuff in this bonus video.

You know how in media like The Hunger Games, and The Expanse, the charismatic leader who helps take down the Dystopia is also a dangerous egomaniac that also needs to be taken down? That always feels like a reference to the aftermath of the French Revolution. In the Scarlett Pimpernel (originally a stage play) the hero is saving aristocrats from the guillotine and smuggling them to England, not trying to stop the revolution.

Is it weird that I'm hearing John DiMaggio in Tim Curry's Joker? He sounds like Jake the Dog from "Adventure Time" but with a slower cadence.

in the other timeline, Tim Curry played the Joker and Mark Hamill played Invader Zim.

I adore Last of Shiela, but I feel I have to warn for some era typical homophobia that some viewers might not be up for.

I am fashionably VERY late to the conversation, but I would LOVE to hear you geek out for hours on Gargoyles!
