What's the biggest chance you ever took? In a perfect world, risk would be unnecessary, and we'd know the outcome of every action before we took it. But as the saying goes, nothing ventured, nothing gained -- and sometimes we find ourselves leaping before we look.

My guest this week is Michael Schneider, a Portland writer and artist whose work you can find at Blcksmth.com -- that's spelled with no vowels -- and whose photos you should absolutely be following on Instagram

Michael's always been drawn to the security of sure things, known quantities, and predictable patterns. But lately he's been experimenting with the idea that when life gets chaotic, sometimes you can respond with a little chaos of your own.

Let me be the first to say: brilliant use of Serial Mom in your final words. That movie is probably my favorite John Waters film, and one of Kathleen Turner's best performances. Which is a good thing, too, because even when this movie was shot her voice had already begun it's descent from Sexy Husky Jessica Rabbit to Chandler's Dad.

I've always loved her best in The Man With Two Brains. But! If you like Serial Mom, you might want to give a listen to our bizarre Serial Mom Cast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZZ_51Jx1VY

I was born in 1971. I knew I was gay since 4-5 yrs old ... In 1975-76 ST was in re-runs. I drooled over the young WS as Kirk. Then later, Harrison Ford.....But once I turned 15 or so, I realized I only liked guys with body/facial hair (bears, Cubs, otters/wolves)... Plus W.S. Turned into a deuche. I have met the entire cast of ST ToS during filing of ST IV because my sister worked for the Union of stage hands... Plus my mom had music / film connections. Suffice to say Majel Barret-Roddenberry befriended me, and she and I kept in contact until 9 months or so b4 she fell ill and passed. Majel was able to bring me onto the TNG set in season three where I just DROOLED over Johnathan Frakes (I always had since season 2). But in person... Wow. He was my height, almost my build (I was more buffed). I've only wanted one woman, and that would have been for the sheer ride of a life: Grace Jones circa 1985-A View To A Kill. Plus her music is WEIRD but good. (Ok now u all know I'm a freak LOL)

Oh man that is fascinating! How wonderful that Majel was a friend -- I've heard that she was a really lovely person. And yes, Grace Jones (while not quite my type) is so iconic and powerful in that role -- probably the most memorable quality of what is, alas, a mediocre Bond film. I do agree about Riker and hair... one of my favorite Q lines is when he complains about Riker being too stolid: "you weren't like that before the beard." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pWmSfIaKro

Grace Jones isn't my type either lol. I'm not a switch hitter, but I always said I go for her. I don't have many icons, nor do I becom a "fan" easily. Majel was one, Leonard Nimoy, Steven Hawking. Ahh yes I was thinking of the line from Q before I wrote that.

That line rocked. Even in Star Trek insurrection were Troy and Riker get together Troy goes "Eww! I've never kissed you with a beard before!" Technically is not correct because she fell for Thomas Riker – William Rikers double from a transporter accident, and she kissed him regularly and didn't have a problem with the beard – so this is a production/writing/whatever error But I wonder if the eww (I think it was yuk!) I never kissed you with a beard before was a tribute way back to when you said you were never that way before the beard

Ok that's a good point! I forgot about the Thomas Riker storyline. Gosh, that certainly made for a strange twist in the universe.
