Hey! Jason here, producer of CrossFade, MinnMax’s music podcast. On this week’s episode, we’re talking about Rush’s “2112” and Curtis Mayfield’s “Super Fly” with composer Jason Graves – send us some questions and songs to talk about!

We’re recording this week’s episode Wednesday, so send your questions and songs by the end of the day Tuesday (June 1)!

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Jason Graves is a composer whose credits include Dead Space, Until Dawn, Tomb Raider, The Order: 1886, The Dark Pictures Anthology, and a lot more, including the 2003 The Hobbit video game published by Sierra. (I’m definitely going to ask about that one.)
  • Rush’s “2112” is a 1976 prog rock staple that earned the band their first US Top 100 record and influenced rock storytelling for decades.
  • “Super Fly” is a soundtrack by Curtis Mayfield for the 1972 Blaxploitation movie of the same name. It’s also a great standalone album and a touchstone of ‘70s funk and soul.

CrossFade publishes every other Friday, so subscribe, rate, and review wherever you get podcasts: https://apple.co/3kWBb5K

If you’re not listening to CrossFade, check it out! It’s our music podcast where Matt Helgeson, who knows way too much about all kinds of music, swaps one of his favorite albums with a guest’s and they review them together. It’s for music nerds, casual listeners, and anyone who loves great conversations about great music.

Thanks for checking out CrossFade!

Welcome to Crossfade, Jason! You're listed as the composer for Cardboard Bernini, a documentary about an artist creating a detailed cardboard fountain destined for destruction. As an artist have you ever found it hard to move on from a project, or are you happy to let the finished work out into the world?

Is there room for one more Jason? I live in Kyiv, Ukraine and showed my friend Rush. He liked them and then was extremely surprised when I showed him a live concert with many thousands of people in attended. He could not believe that a prog rock band like that could have such a huge following. My question is, as a composer for video games - other people's works - how do you separate your own musical tastes and ambitions from just getting the job done? Do you ever compose a piece of music that really is not your taste but you know it is the best piece of music for the work? My song recommendation for this week is ГГПТКН by Vivienne Mort (G,G,P,T,K,N if you will, though the G is soft like a "hu") It's got serious Dresden Dolls and Regina Spektor vibes https://open.spotify.com/track/3EYcZerCqUPbC4b684lNiK?si=83dfa0acb6264c4c

Oh man this is going to be interesting Curtis Mayfield is a cool pick but I do not like Rush. :). My question, is there a band that in retrospect you should of been in to when you were younger but have now realized how great they were. My answer is Alice In Chains I liked when their songs were on the radio but never bought the albums and wouldn’t list them in my favorites but now I feel like a fool.

Pusherman has been one of my all time "Feeling like a real cool dude" songs. Just strutting when that one hits the headphones. Favorite songs that just make you feel like the coolest dude on the block when they come on?

Jason – you were part of the team that composed for The Hobbit, the 2003 game by Sierra. What do you remember about that time? How did it feel to be contributing to such a huge cultural thing that wasn’t DIRECTLY in the spotlight?

2023-06-01 06:23:15 I know I'm late, but hopefully I can sneak a question in under the wire... Clutch has about a million one-off songs that were on demos, B-sides on singles, or soundtracks that were difficult to track down, so they released a collection of these tracks on a full-length-sized album (Pitchfork and Lost Needles). Can you think of any other bands that could fill an album with quality "lost" tracks? My song recommendation is from that album - "Bottoms Up, Socrates," which is my favorite Clutch song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iKchE9psao&ab_channel=Clutch-Topic
