Hey, MinnMax! CrossFade producer Jason Dafnis here. Send us your questions, songs, and thoughts for this Friday’s episode of our music podcast! Our guest is Lizzie Killian, founder of video game PR company FIFTYcc (and Jeff Cork’s new boss). Lizzie picked Weezer’s 1996 album Pinkterton and Matt picked A Laughing Death in Meatspace by Australian rock band Tropical F*** Storm (because of course he did).

Pinkerton is Weezer’s grim follow-up to their poppy debut album, and a lot of people think it’s their best album. A Laughing Death in Meatspace is an off-the-wall modern prog album with a dark sense of humor. It’s gonna be a fun time!

Send Us Songs & Questions!

We’d love to know what you think, so send us your burning questions for Matt and our guest as well as songs you want us to listen to! We’re recording Wednesday, so send your submissions by the end of the day Tuesday.

Even if we don’t get to your song this episode, we’ll add it to the CrossFade Community Spotify Playlist (https://spoti.fi/3aRRgox) and your song might be pulled on a future Community Shuffle episode, so keep sharing!

Hey Crossfaders! I've been on a early psychedelic/soul kick and been loving this song. You've Got a Woman by Lion. https://open.spotify.com/track/2YHO9pscU1ij1i2Oc3bCae?si=5iLfXeasSqi6x-3sSpCG7g&utm_source=copy-link

Sup y'all! Has Weezer been really bad the last 15+ years or is it just become a meme at this point like Nickelback or Limp Bizkit? For my song request I'd like it to do 2 things. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the release of The Low End Theory but it also marks the 5th year since we lost Phife and I'd like to pick this song to play for listeners Tribe Called Quest - Buggin' Out: https://open.spotify.com/track/6GAemDMWAXa8wZOBkO1gar?si=8-XrdNgoRQGMt5R1BLaPdw&utm_source=copy-link PS You guys should do a special on Tribe sometime.

Hi, I want to know what are some of the most ridiculous lyrics you have misinterpreted? For me I got so many of the lyrics to Back in the USSR wrong, like "On my way the paperback was on my knee" and not "paper bag was on my knee" "Jo jo's always on my mind" and not "Georgia's on my mind" (I was a literal child, give me a break) and "Let me hear your bell like it's ringing out" and not "Let me hear your balalaikas ringing out" (again, a child, had not idea what a balalaika was) As for my recommendation: I gotta recommend Me V. Angry Mob by The World/Inferno Friendship Society. The lead singer Jack Terricloth just died on Friday and me and all of my friends are still in shock. I saw this band play probably around 100 times and opened for them a few times too.

Hey Matt and Jason, and welcome to the show Lizzie Killian! I have to ask: how did it come about that musician Jonathan Mann wrote a song called "Happy Birthday Lizzie Cuevas" ? *** my song this week is Mainstream Madness by Dave Zoller. https://open.spotify.com/track/3sSlhzPWMjXgNoKV2j4gdF?si=K717qRFJTyiPtG1lBgQ4wA&utm_source=copy-link

Hey everyone! I called into MinnMax Council a while back to talk about Modest Mouse and coincidentally I saw Tropical Fuck Storm open for them in 2018. Hop Along, an indie rock group from Philly, also toured with the band several years back and they’re one of my absolute favorites, I’d love to hear y’all’s thoughts! My question is for Lizzie: How would you handle PR for a band named Tropical Fuck Storm if it were a video game? Why don't video games use provocative titles like these, but music and movies do? Thanks, Thom

Hey Crossfaders I am anxious to hear the long discussion of the F Storm. Can Matt keep this show under 3 hours :). My question is does your musical talents /abilities help you appreciate things that are good, but does it ever make it difficult to listen to things that aren’t the best. I am an amateur sound engineer and when a mix at something live or recorded is really bad it completely breaks me.

Which song has the better hook: George Harrison's What Is Life or Abba's Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)?

It's only natural to compare Weezer's first two albums to each other, and after the lighthearted pop hits on The Blue Album, Pinkerton was a bit of a shock to a lot of fans. I think contrasting the song "No One Else" from The Blue Album with the song "No Other One" on Pinkerton really encapsulates this difference. They practically have the same title, but "No One Else" is about breaking up with a girl because she laughs too much, and "No Other One" is about being afraid of being alone. These two songs are not really the stars of either album, but I think they most succinctly demonstrate the progression between the two albums. I'm guessing you will talk about your feelings on Weezer's overall trajectory during your discussion, but what song do you think epitomizes current/late period Weezer? For song suggestions, I would like to suggest "These Days" from former Weezer bassist Matt Sharp's other band, The Rentals. I came to really miss Matt Sharp's influence in the later Weezer albums, and I think this song in particular shares the vibe of a lot of Pinkerton, while still having the unique sound from The Rentals' synth and female backing vocals. https://open.spotify.com/track/36iaJl6hWaEdwiKhSkCGGi?si=1Gz32CAHQBuBrVxq3k0nzQ

There's already some comments here about how Weezer sucks after the first two albums, and I have to say I strongly disagree and think this opinion is based off a dark mid 2000s. I wanted to give a quick overview of their discography and if Lizzie has stuck with them maybe she can agree/disagree. The golden albums — and Green (1994 - 2002) : Blue Pinkerton Green Maladroit The rough years (2005-2010): Make Believe Red Raditude Hurley The Weezer Renaissance (2014-2017): Everything Will Be Alright in the End White Pacific Daydream Solid but Hit and Miss — with Ok Human being top 4 Weeze (2019-2021): Teal Black Ok Human Van Weezer Like I said, those bad years were bad. But Weezer has put out a ton of music and there are almost always a few great tracks on each album. Rivers has a great voice and penchant for melody.
