Can we for another moment appreciate the opening area? I know when you lose all of your Lives in the darkness of a Bowser Battle or the long jumps for all the Coins. It is frustrating. It is rage inducing. And then..... bright colors. Soothing music. Green Trees and.... what's that? Butterfly's? Seriously how long have Butterflys been in that opening area? And how/why are they so calming. Forget the Stars! I'm chasing Butterflys!

In this final chunk of the game, I thought the stages had some of the most conceptually interesting gimmicks and mechanics, even if the execution didn't always nail it. For instance I *really* love Tiny Huge Island and the ability it gives you to essentially swap the geometry's scale, and I wished they had done more with that concept. This got me thinking: are there any stages or stage concepts from this game that you'd love to see revisited with Odyssey-style production values?

A note about the Donkey Kong Country 3 comment from last time: The comment was framed as though DKC3 were "ripping off" the Mario 64 music, but it's pretty clear that it's a direct, sanctioned reference to another Nintendo product. Wrinkly is literally playing a Nintendo 64 and says, "I'm glad Cranky doesn't know about this new console. If he did, I'd never be able to get him off of it!" DKC3 came out in the Winter of '96, well after the release of the N64 and SM64, so the reference is clear as day. (Mario, Link, and Yoshi also have cameo appearances in DKC2.) One final note about DKC3--that game absolutely rules and is criminally underrated. :) Here's a screenshot of the scene in question: https://imgur.com/gpVN5Xo

Now that we're all the way through, I'm here with the MinnMax community ranking of all 15 worlds! 1. Bob-omb Battlefield 2. Whomp's Fortress 3. Wet-Dry World 4. Big Boo's Haunt 5. Cool, Cool Mountain 6. Tall, Tall Mountain 7. Lethal Lava Land 8. Jolly Roger Bay 9. Tick Tock Clock 10. Shifting Sand Land 11. Tiny-Huge Island 12. Snowman's Land 13. Dire, Dire Docks 14. Rainbow Ride 15. Hazy Maze Cave Some interesting notes: - The top 2 were in their own tier, way ahead of 3rd place - 4 of the top 5 were from the first section of the game - 9 different worlds received at least 1 first place vote - 8 different worlds received at least 1 last place vote - Every world was in someone's top 3 except Hazy Maze Cave - Tiny-Huge Island was the most polarizing, with multiple votes putting it in the top 3 and multiple also putting it dead last

My hot take after finishing M64: Mario’s long jump is the best move in the video game history and 90% of the pleasure I had replaying this game came from that freaking jump :) I now want to long jump in every other video game, even in real life ^^

Regarding the cannon to shoot yourself up the castle: I have a super weird memory from back in the day before Mario 64 released. I remember getting a VHS at Toys R Us that basically was a Mario 64 promo. I watched that tape a ton and there was one part where they randomly showed a glitch?? You were able to make jumps outside the castle in a specific way that glitched you up the castle. I was trying (amateurishly) to copy that move for hours but was never able to.

Hey cohorts! This may be unpopular, but I love the last two worlds of this game! I’ve always been more of a fan of the linear style 3D Mario games, so the more difficult, single path obstacle levels are really speaking to me much more than the openness of the earlier levels. The repeat climbs to the top of each level can get repetitive but I really feel like the challenging platforming was really engaging and for the most part fair. Not as many cheap, janky deaths as what I imagined. I was actually dreading this section earlier in the playthrough because I thought these levels were gonna age poorly and be too frustrating. So how did you guys fair with these levels? Am I crazy? Let’s-a-go! -Beeks from Grand Rapids, MI

Howdy My sister (who cannot beat me in basketball) stole my cartridge, so I haven't been able to keep up with the Deepest Dive. I just wanted to say playing through this really makes me want that remake we thought was coming. It still plays well, but I'd love something that's a little tighter with better camera control like Mario Odyssey. Thanks!

One thing I love about Super Mario 64, is its length. It's just the right size to be easily be repayable. You can rack up stars quickly and yet most stars still manage to feel satsifying to get. It's been a blast to revisit a classic flaws and all. Hopefully this won't be the last Mario game to get a deep dive😆

Forget Dark Souls, this game is hard! I got the bare minimum 70 stars to fight Bowser in the Sky. It took me three hours to finally beat him, mostly due to sheer luck. I had no problem getting the first two hits by luring him near the edge, right next to a bomb and slowly throwing him into them, but trying to time the last throw was a nightmare. Late last night I was about to give up, but lucked out with one final throw with only a slice of health remaining and it finally hit. I swear I fought him 100 times. Anyone else struggle with this one?
