That work I did with conforming feet figures finally paid off! I decided that the gargoyle feet looked the best for this case, as the dragon ones were a bit too long/skinny. Making them small enough to hide inside Peach's feet wasn't too bad either, though it did limit how much I could bend them.
The two remaining issues to overcome were 1) what to do with the heels 2) how to transition between human and monster feet. Thankfully, the technique of having the heels "split" open like this solved both problems, as the top of the heel covers the seam where the two feet intersect (well, at least until the end when we "go for broke")
In order to achieve this, I had to add a second copy of the heels to the scene. One copy has the bottom half invisible, and the other has the top half invisible. This illusion was necessary because the mesh is connected top and bottom, so there wasn't a way to make a single prop split like this.
Of course, I once again had to resort to painting a bunch of weird colors all over the texture and applying it in the scene to figure out which part of the texture was which; telling inside from out was easy enough, but telling top from sides from bottom was not. I should look into a program that allows me to paint directly onto the mesh.
Then I had to do a bunch of posing to make the top/bottom heels look right. They are both conforming figures, which means they want to stay attached to the parent figure's feet/toes, but I'm offsetting them from their natural position, which causes... strangeness.
I'm still not 100% happy with it... I would have preferred to have morphs to turn her feet more seamlessly into monster form, but alas, I do not have those. This will have to suffice.
