That Ol' Update Thang (Patreon)
Content
Hey guys! I hope you had a great Thanksgiving and are now having a great December! Now that the mad rush to review everything in the world is over, I figured I'd pop in and give you a quick update.
First off, WHEW!!! I've been in a mad dash since mid-October, and I tell ya, it feels GOOD to be done with it. I don't believe I've ever put out that much content within one month before. Fortunately I've seen a great return on my time; the videos did well overall, with the Skyrim and Doom reviews performing so much better than I could have ever imagined! Getting out timely reviews ended up being just as beneficial as I hoped, especially coming out so close together. The month gave me a great subscriber boost, which is great because my growth had been stalling for a good few months. My original goal was to reach 250k subs by the end of this year, but then Youtube started, well...being Youtube. I reached a point where I would be happy hitting 200k, though even that started to look impossible. Now if I were able to keep up my momentum into December I just might be able to pull 200k off. I know I won't, seeing as there aren't a million games coming out in December that I want to review, but the fact that I got sort of potentially close is still really encouraging! I thought I'd fail miserably! XP.
The only real disappointment this month was the Resident Evil Revelations Collection review. I guess not that many of my fans are into Resident Evil, and/or not that many Switch-owners are into Resident Evil. Either that or I just made the review too long and scared people off. It was for two different games, so the long run time made sense, but maybe it was just too daunting for the average viewer. I just love the series and wanted to give the games the proper review treatment, but in retrospect it was a little silly to spend so much time on them. I guess I was still buzzing with how well Skyrim and Doom did that I didn't think very carefully about how not every game would drum up as much interest. But oh well! At the very least I'm proud of the work I did, and sometimes even if it doesn't do very well it still feels good to talk about something I enjoy. It makes me feel a little more like a gaming enthusiast and less like a view-chasing Youtuber, hah.
Anyway, onto December! The very first thing I've got planned is the Super Mario Odyssey review! I'm posting it tomorrow (Tuesday), though I haven't decided exactly when yet. Maybe around noon or something. But boy howdy, I'm glad to be done with it. Being so late makes it much less relevant and thus it won't get me a lot of new fans, but much like the Breath of the Wild review it's mostly for you guys. I wanted to make sure it was really in-depth. And it's pretty funny that it turned out this way, because I recall rushing to finish extra content so that I had something to post while I worked on the review so I could get it out as soon as possible. But then...November happened. Pretty funny. But anyway, I hope you all enjoy it! It's, um...really long. Also as something of a side note, I put multiple ads in it. I feel kind of slimy doing that, but it's basically three videos in one; that's nearly an entire month of content released all at once. So in the end I decided to monetize it a little harder. Hopefully it's not too intrusive. They're widely spaced, as though the video was actually made up of three normal-sized videos.
After that I've got slightly more content lined up than can fit into a seven-day-spaced month, so the exact release days of the rest are still up in the air. First, I had the fun idea of predicting what Nintendo's entire 2018 will look like. I thought after all the craziness leading up to finishing the Mario review I would be too brain-dead to want to do anything, but this script was so much fun to write that I had no problem getting the first draft done today. I'm going to go over all games and announcements with lots of stupidly-exact little details. I just hope it's as fun to watch as it was to come up with.
Then I want to do a Christmas special for the fans. Channel update-type videos traditionally don't do too well, so I try not to do them very often (even the Arlopalooza video did pretty badly view-wise, and I thought that was an interesting one). But it's Christmas and I never officially celebrated my channel's three-year anniversary, or even hitting 100k subscribers way back in January. Plus I've got lots of stuff to say. Lots of thank yous and all that, plus I want to talk a little bit about money and sponsored content just to make things crystal clear in that regard, because the channel's seen some changes this year. I finally got my silver play button a few months back, so I can unbox that for you fine folks. Then maybe I'll throw in some holiday-related silliness, I'm not sure yet. But it'll be fun.
I also want to do a review of Breath of the Wild's DLC, and the day it launches will largely determine the scheduling of these other videos. The Game Awards are in a few days, and there's a 99.97% chance the release date will be announced there, so we'll know soon enough. The review will be for the Expansion Pass as a whole, including the previously-released content. Unfortunately that means I've got to play and complete the new content before I can review any of it, but that's why I'll be working as fast as I can on the other two videos while I'm waiting for the DLC thing to pan out. And hey, November showed me that I can play and review a game in mere DAYS if I work myself ragged enough, so it shouldn't be a problem!
Lastly Lockstin and I are going to do a top ten games of 2017 type of thing. It won't be a definitive list, because we're each going to bring games to it, and there will be some overlap and such. Really it'll just be a "here are ten games that at least one of us really liked" kind of thing, if that makes sense. We'll shoot some wrap-around stuff for that in a few days when he visits from Oregon before we make our way to Sac Gamer's Expo, and the video will probably release very late in the month, maybe even on New Year's Eve.
And that's December! The only other exciting thing is, like I said, Sac Gamer's Expo. I'm REALLY looking forward to it, last year was just a ton of fun. And my channel's twice as big this year, hopefully meaning twice as many fans to hang out with! If you're in or around the Sacramento, CA area, I hope to see you there! And if you're planning on showing up, let me know down in the comments!
As always, a million thanks to any and all new patrons since last time, and I'll catch you guys later!
