The Heinkel He 162 "Volksjäger" was a last ditch effort by the Luftwaffe  to field a large number of jet fighters to stem the tide in the air.  Join me as I explore this history - was this plan ever going to work?

Let me know what you think of this episode! Big thank you for all your support.

Edit: My brain managed to mix up some numbers and wrote He 172 instead of He 162 and He 178 in two instances. Apologies, new link is up!

Easy to fly with the then current jet technology does seem like an impossible dream. ... but when you are behind the 8 ball, priorities get fouled up. Keeping the number one goal of easy to fly would have probably taken way more research and time than Germany had. Different subject : Have you made a video about what went wrong with the Nazi AF? It seems it lacked a coherent intent.. maybe it was the lack of understanding the German Military was very well made to beat any European county but never caught on that Russia was a much larger country. The thought that the war would end soon led to many bad decisions. I realize this sounds simplistic but anticipating operational problems seems to been a problem for the OKW and it doesn't seem to have had a Grand strategy except ...win... But I admit that I am not well read on the Russia Air War.. Anyway,... what do you think?

Thanks for this quick review of the 162! It does seem to be a case of trying anything that might be useful in a time of desperation. I've seen the 162 at the Planes of Fame museum in Chino, California. That's a really unique and interesting place!

I need to plan a visit to Chino once all the rains stops.
