If you ever wondered how to attract attention, take inspiration from “Aleutian Tiger”. This P-40K, painted in the colours of AVG Commander Claire Chennault’s son John Chennault unit, the 11th Fighter Squadron, sure is a looker. Striking an aggressive and colourful pose, this Warhawk (or Kittyhawk) reminds us of the American Volunteer Group fighting in China during World War 2 against Japan. This bird doesn’t just have a neat paint job then but it conjures up a fascinating history too. Jump on board with me and discover the ins-and-outs of the P-40!

Big thank you to Fagen Fighters WW2 Museum for providing exclusive access during Oshkosh 2023!

Have a great weekend, a fantastic and successful start into 2024 and thank you for making this project a reality!

Inside The Cockpit - P-40K Kittyhawk "Aleutian Tiger"

The P-40 might not get the love the P-47 Thunderbolt and P-51 Mustang get but this American warbird has plenty of stories to tell. Join me as I jump into a flightworthy Kittyhawk, or Warhawk if you prefer to be a purist, and discover this aircraft inside-out. This P-40 is a regular visitor to Oshkosh, and always looks good! Thanks for the peek into the cockpit, but... I have to ask what the Vise-Grips are for?? Are they to be used if some handle breaks off while flying? Or just a handy tool during the pre-flight inspection?

A few things in perspective. 3000 RPM, 1940's technology, impressive. My Subaru Outback. I'd never operate it at 3000 RPM. I cruise around 2000 RPM for max gas mileage and without getting pushed off California freeway system. I saw a P-40 up close at a Museum in Georgia, Air Force Base (I think). Amazed at fabric covered control surfaces. I guess it worked and saved weight. Final observation at 10:00, the vice grip. Oh, Steve saw this too. I'd like to hear a veteran P-40 pilot discuss how clean this aircraft is compared to what was flown in theater. Thank's Chris, a 31-Dec-23 extra!
