The Walkman was a nice surprise - the Walkman II was planned.

In recent years, the original blue and silver Sony Walkman has become an icon. Images of it can be found adorning countless items of retro themed apparel. But the hard truth is that it was always a bit of a half-arsed bodge job of a device (IMHO).

The Walkman II was Sony’s first proper attempt at making a personal stereo from scratch. The original may have introduced the idea but the WMII was the one that formed the blueprint for what followed.

It’s extremely unlikely though that you’ll find an image of the Walkman II on a teeshirt, so that’s why I’ve made this video about it.

If this description makes it sound like this is a serious video - it’s really not and it intentionally gets sillier as it progresses. I did anticipate this would be an easy, quick video to make. It ended up being neither due to the large number of elements that had to be assembled together. I think it all worked out in the end though.

After this rather intense, edit-heavy week, I could do with taking a day or two away from the computer screen to give my eyes time to rest - especially the dodgy right one which is giving me some gyp. So this would seem like a good opportunity to record something for a Patreon update. Perhaps we’ll see how that works out later in the week.

Take care.

UPDATE

There’s a re-edit below which removes one second of audio that was difficult to understand.

Walkman II : The Do-over. The start of something small

Some say that the Walkman II was the first proper Walkman. I'm not saying that because I can't deal with the hassle - but it was definitely an opportunity for Sony to reset and start again. I love your deep dives...I did not know all those acc were available...of course, I was not rich enough back then to afford a walkman of any type.

Well I have to disagree! I had an aiwa device as a kid back in the 80s/90s that worked similar to original mechanism (but worse quality) and those sad on ear headphones. only much later I got in ears. but maybe we were just poor. 🙈

You’re agreeing, not disagreeing. 1) A kid with a hand me down - ✅ 2) Someone using a non-Sony - ✅
