UPDATE - I think Dawn has found the TV show I was attempting to remember (it turned out to be a TV movie from 1976 - more info in the comments below).

There is an English audio designer called Douglas Self who has designed a lot of high end stuff for Cambridge Audio, Soundcraft and others, who has very definite opinions about audio nonsense like CD shavers and magic cables etc. You might like to read some of what he has written, although it might be rather long: http://www.douglas-self.com/ampins/pseudo/subjectv.htm

Regarding the laptop, i know you've got it so my input is pointless, it's not bad and for a refurb it's a fairly decent price, this Thinkpad L430 has the best laptop keyboard i've ever used and that alone would be worth a premium for me.
