Yes another map episode plus nice to see Gilda again and get a reformation for her

It's been a while since we saw anything of the Griffons. They've always been one of the standard "not Equestria" factions in the fandom. Dramatic stories often feature a militaristic Griffon Empire as Equestria's main geopolitical rival, often modeled after the Holy Roman Empire. The monster that stole the idol is taken from ancient Greek traveler's tales. Supposedly they lived somewhere near the Ural mountains, and tried to steal gold from griffons also in that region. I'm no flight expert, but I imagine there's not much room to maneuver in the chasm. Hit a sudden shift in the wrong direction and you get smacked into the walls at high speed. Keep your wings flat and you are much less affected by the wind.

Great episode. We see Gilda again, and get a bit of redemption for her. More importantly, we get a lot of lore and backstory for the griffons. We get another glimpse at death in the series with the monster's skeleton. I wouldn't expect anything much more out of a young children's show, but this was a bit of a step up from the coffin in an earlier episode. Twilight's annoyance at not getting picked to go to Griffinstone is cute. And yes, she has royal duties to attend to. She can't just up and leave unless the map asks her to. Next up is the 100th episode. Let's just say that we'll be on hand to explain things afterward ;)

I'm glad you got the ending of this episode. You're one of the first reactors I've seen that actually gets the "Last Crusade" reference at the end. I'm happy someone finally gets it!

This is an episodic, slice of life, animated kids series, there isn't a 'greater story' or any really chance of major harm or such. On the winds... crosswinds. We see the winds going all over the place as Gilda fell, just because the very top has the winds blowing up, does not mean the entire thing is blowing that way, that's not how wind works in these situations. That far in the wind would have tossed RD all over the place, up, down, slammed her into walls, it was far to dangerous to trust. And as usual, Aramaspi is a creature from ancient legends, the same ones that gave us griffons and where the griffons love of gold come from.

Yeah, the writers just needed a way to put Rainbow Dash in a position where she'd need to be rescued by Gilda so that Gilda could have her arc, so they used "the wind's too strong." It's not particularly well written in that regard. =P
