Azula is either my first or second favorite character of the series. We'll be meeting the other one shortly. I imagine the topknot cutting is to help them stand out less. If you're on the run, changing your appearance significantly is an obvious choice, and hair is a good starting point.

I'm not sure of the exact details but im pretty sure It's based on the Japanese/Samurai tradition of the top knot being a symbol of honor and cutting it would be a symbol akin to death of an identity/ or dishonor in their case they're now fugitives. Also yes- Azula is pretty Bad Ass, probably one of my favorite characters of the show too plus a top-notch antagonist in general.

I'm not confirming Zhao is alive or dead, but you got to remember that this show was targeted to both adult and kids so the "never trust an offscreen death" mindset doesn't really apply, since Nickelodeon would never allow a character to be blatantly shown dying.

Nickelodeon has a habit of treating kids like they can't handle adult subjects(which I strongly disagree with) so they never showed deaths on screen for shows targeting younger audiences.
