I enjoyed this more than I remembered. Now, onto the highlights: First, you're not the only one who had to get used to Twilight with wings. It was a huge deal within the fandom. Heck, even Twilight herself is going to have to get use to this. Her immediate reaction to all of this was "Uh, is there a book on how to be a princess?" She does NOT feel ready for this right now. As for alicorns - Yes, they are exceedingly rare. Until Twilight's ascension, there was only Celestia, Luna, and Cadance. All of them EARNED their alicorn powers (this is explained in several books, but not so much in the show). There has never been an alicorn that was simply born that way. They all have to earn it through extraordinary feats of strength, knowledge, compassion etc. We also see in this episode that the citizens of Ponyville would descend into petty squabbles without a literal representation of laughter to help keep them entertained. Thank goodness for Pinkie Pie. We also get a call back to Star Swirl the Bearded, which is the pony Twilight dressed up as for Nightmare Night (Halloween). It turns out he was an exceedingly powerful wizard from thousands of years ago who was gifted in magic. Though, according to Celestia, he clearly didn't know much about friendship, and that's where Twilight was able to fix the spell he tried to create. I guess it's onto the Equestria Girls (title is a play on Katy Perry's California Girls) movie now. I know Adderbane has a spoiler-free version, so that's good. The movie is going to open up a lot more possibilities for the ponies. Just going to leave it at that.

Next should be the first Equestria Girls movie!

Magical Mystery Cure. The episode that broke the fandom. Thus ends what we might call the classical era of MLP:FIM. The ascension of Twilight Sparkle to alicornhood upended everything. Many felt that this was a reasonable outgrowth of her character arc. Others weren’t particularly happy, but came to accept it. A non-insignificant segment, particularly the Lauren Faust purists, loudly declared the series RUINED FOREVER™ and abandoned things entirely. This schism ended the fad phase of the MLP fandom in the early part of the decade. Even among the remaining fans, this episode presented a challenge to integrate into the existing lore. There are two major conceptions of alicorns. The first seems to be closer to what Faust originally conceived; that they are a unique tribe, of which Celestia and Luna are the sole remaining members, with various domains over the natural world. Working Cadance into this model posed a challenge, but given alicorn apparent immortality (Celestia and Luna are well over a millennium old), a variety of solutions presented themselves. One talented writer had Cadance as the long lost daughter of the last ruler of the Crystal Empire before Sombra’s coup, raised in secret by a religious order (also in this story, Chysalis is Cadance’s half-sister, and the offspring of the union formed by the love-poison story from the Big Mac and Cheerilee Valentines episode). This writer also introduced the concept that alicorns are like dragons, in that their size and power grows with their dominion. This nicely explains Luna’s transformation between the S1 premiere where she is small and weak, stripped of her power, to her later appearance that is larger, and more Celestia-like, with the signature ethereal mane as she begins to rule as an equal. Cadance is thus large for a pony, but not to the scale of the Sisters. The second idea is more like what we see here. That alicorns were once ordinary ponies that became something more through a moment of transcendental enlightenment and powerful magic. You are right in that Twilight becoming an alicorn is an immensely significant event; for a very long time, there was only one Princess in Equestria. At Cadance’s appearance it became two, Luna’s return made three, now there are four. This raises the question of how did the other three ascend. According to the semi-canon side material (Hasbro has various books and comics, but these are not reliably taken into account by the show writers unfortunately) she was a Pegasus, who defeated a witch by reversing a love-stealing spell into a love-amplifying one, becoming the Princess of Love. Celestia and Luna’s origin is not described, but it must have happened around the time of the unification of the Pegasi, Unicorns and Earth Ponies into one nation. I’ve seen it fairly common to depict them as Earth Ponies pre-ascension. It is important to note that Alicorns have the power and magic of all three pony tribes. Often, it’s easy to focus on the wings and horn, and forget that they also have the power of the Earth Ponies, such as it is. Now that I’ve given my essay on Alicorn-lore, we should probably discuss the actual episode. Overall, this episode was not particularly well-liked among the fandom; I believe its main flaw is trying to cram far too much story into a single episode, which ruins the pacing and an event of this magnitude needed far more foreshadowing than it received. I thought the ascension scene itself was well done, with the transition to the astral realm, and the gallery of previous moments, but it needed more build up for the actual feat of achieving it. Many people stopped watching at this episode, which is a pity, because I believe that the next few seasons are some of the best the show has to offer. I think you’ll enjoy them a great deal. First, however, there’s the matter of the Equestria Girls movie. It takes place directly between season 3 and 4, and while the show doesn’t draw on it (much like how the events of the various Marvel TV shows aren’t referenced in the Marvel movies) it is technically canon, and the second movie (taking place between seasons 4 and 5) is considered to be excellent. We strongly advise doing at least the first two as you come to them, and the others if you’re enjoying it. Further, there’s a fan-made Star Wars/Equestria Girls crossover animation that I think you’d particularly enjoy which you’d need the first two movies to understand. Unfortunately, the first movie is no longer available on Netflix (why I have no idea), so I’ll post a link to a copy in the Discord. I’ve edited it to remove the spoilers from the intro credits, and I recommend using it as your only MLP content for next week, considering it’s a 73 minute movie.

Now that you've watched the finale I can finally say, the picture you had in the left top corner of S1 & S3 are incredibly spoilery, take another look.

I can’t argue against the pacing complaints, in fact the whole episode is a bit of a fever dream with all the songs, and rush, but it doesn’t change the fact that it is one of my favourites, and the ascension scene bring tears to my eyes.

20:50 as a matter of fact Twilight is larger now, there are comparison shots on the internet that show that she is just a tiny bit higher than her previous incarnation, with loner neck and sleeker body. Now, Alicorn status in the world is a big mystery and fans spent a lot of time theorising about the very questions you brought up. No universal answer was found, but I personally rationalise it like this: Alicorns aren’t a royal in a normal sense, they are individuals entrusted with immense powers so they can serve pony kind in ways no mortal pony can. But, as we know, great powers corrupt greatly, so in order to prevent the abuses of alicorn powers, they are only given to ponies of outstanding personal qualities, the noblest and most virtuous. And these kinds of ponies are rare to come by, and so Alicorns are rare too, with Cadance and Twilight bring the only two ponies, deemed worthy, that we know of.

This episode was originally intended to be the series finale, before they discovered just how popular the show has become, and decided to continue it.

One thing you gotta remember is that Twilight's sorta of the main character of the show, and so the big events tend to revolve around her.

congrats you just witnessed the show kill it's main character.... ok so that's more of a head cannon in the fandom but think about it she got vaporized was sent to a almost spiritual like plain of existence and watched as her life flashed before her eyes. then she gets her wings like an angel and ascends to equestria to help guide the world. this also explains why tia and luna are so old and not dead they died as young foals and became everlasting angels. as for the end it just ended like that because at the time this show was only meant to have 65 episodes total so that hasbro could syndicate it and help sell more toys but the fandom grew and hasbro saw that they could make more money by continuing the show so it was announced five seasons would be made this however became clear later in season 4 that it was 5 total but 5 more thus why it has 9 seasons total. also this is where the series branches off into a sorta spin off series that had several theatrical releases called equestria girls. its not needed as the show doesn't effect the equestria series but equestria does effect the other series so its worth watching if you like world building.

M. A. Larson actually wrote a 2 part Finale for this, but then he learned the season would be cut in half so he had to rewrite it to make it shorter, that's why there's a lot of songs, and why everything seems rushed.

Magical Mystery CAVE? Holy Pony Cave, Mare Do-Well! It wasn't the strike. The thirteen episode thing was another aspect of Hasbro intending to cancel the show this season. . I'M NOT CRYING (again)!!! LOOK AWAY! . Glad you enjoyed the musical episode. There will be more. They won't always be for 'big' things, but they're always fun! . Several of the ponies have different singing VAs so that may be why you noticed differences here. . Alicorns are exceedingly rare. I do like that princesshood isn't something inherited in this universe, it's something earned and not just anyone can do it. Just going by Celestia in this episode, one needs to demonstrate the elements regularly and also do a great task. Yes, Twilight messed up, but she did figure it out and corrected it. She surpassed her idol and impressed her mentor multiple times, so no small task.

As far as we know, Celestia and Luna were born alicorns. While The Journal isn't officially canon, parts of it have been used for backstory in the show and nothing has outright refuted that part of their backstory. It's just Cadance and Twilight (that we know of) who ascended to that state.

Ah the second great Fandom Drama after Derpnaock. Yes Cadance caused one but it was minor compared to either Derpnarock or Twilacorn. This led to the still used phrase 'Thanks M.A. Larson' started by people wanting to show how much they appreciate the work he's done after some idiots started getting pissy at him over writing this ep. Thankfully that dies down and Larson took it in stride, it's become a jokeing meme that even he plays into at times that Larson can/will grant anyone wings. Interesting catch on Twi sounding different when singing, becuase she does. Twilight is one of the many characters who has a separate VA for songs then they do for regular speech. Of the Mane 6 only Applejack and RD have the same VA for both, since Ashley Ball is a professional singer as well as VA. And very nice timing on catching that because Twi's song VA, Rebecca Sotchet (sp), is just about to show up voicing her own character. There is a lot of debate over just what that spell did to change things. Peronsally I go the Sir Terry Pratchet route of "Of course it's always been there, but had it always been there yesterday?" (A line from one of his books, in this case talking about one of those mysterious shops that shows up out of nowhere one day but everyone swears has always been there.) That the spell didn't actually change anything about the past, but rather altered everyponies memories of the past to make them think this was how things had always been while messing with the Mane 6's 'destiny' (and that is a term that is massively loaded with stuff to discuss just what it means in and of itself) The reason the ep is so rushed is tied into why this is only half a season, it wasn't a strike, the show was not originally planned to go any further then this, since this took it to the fabled 65 episodes needed for a cartoon to be syndicated in the US, a point where a LOT of great cartoons get cancelled. Only the shows unexepcted success and how huge it's fanbase got kept it from being another one of these, but the eps are made so far ahead of time that season three was nearly done being made before the descion to keep going came down, as such this ep was written under the assumption it would be a series finale, while still leaving room to keep going if a miracle happened. Larson wanted to make this a two parter but was denied, hence going with making this a musical, as that allows cramming in more story and emotion into a shorter time frame. Within the limits the execs placed on him.... Larson did an amazing job. Thanks M.A. Larson.

Seraphem

Oh, and yes, Twilight is actually a bit larger then she was before. Previously she was the same size as Rarity, now if you get a frame where you can compare the two, Twilight is an inch or two taller.

lots of different theorys have spread and some theorys fans have accepted so there won't be a real known awnser as Hasbro had originally made 3 seasons not expecting a Fandom to ask for more so origanlly they had no answer so the Fandom had made some
