Adderbane

The little gold newsfilly you remarked on doesn't appear to have an official name. Perusing the various fansites, I found her under "Noi" (unsure of the significance) and "Sweet Wheat" (since she stands close to a similarly covered adult mare named "Golden Harvest" in one appearance. She doesn't do anything significant, but does appear in a lovely little animation called "Lyra's Gift" by the YouTuber "AgrolChannel". The gossip columns in this episode introduced a number of little character details. Most significant is Celestia's voracious appetite for cake, which has been a recurring joke ever since. Some writers have justified it with her immense magical potential as an alicorn comes with an equally immense caloric requirement. In any case, the image of the mighty Princess of the Sun, Celestia Sol Invicta, messily gobbling massive cakes has a lot of comedic potential. Also of interest is Rainbow's dislike of hoof contact. I don't know how much thought they put into it, but it's very plausible, as Rainbow is almost always flying or hovering rather than walking, and when she is on her hooves, it's often on top of clouds. This makes her hooves much less worn than most others. It also adds a bit of vulnerability to her character, which provides some nice contrast. I particularly liked the resolution of the story, and how it's better to accept the consequences of your actions and come clean when you're in trouble rather than hoping for a way to shirk your responsibility and keep digging yourself deeper while trying to find an escape. Honesty goes a long way. It also helped flesh out Sweetie Belle's relationship with Rarity a bit; notice how her enthusiasm for the Gabby Gums project grows immensely when Rarity shows approval of it; something Sweetie desperately wants since she looks up to her sister so much.

Another great episode. The CMC's learned a valuable lesson. The hard way, as you said. Some notes: *** Diamond Tiara might be horrible and manipulative, but she actually demonstrated solid leadership ability here. Intriguing. *** Applejack going silent while Big Mac starts talking is indeed a pretty big indication that things just got real. Big Mac shows here that he's certainly capable of talking if things get emotional enough, but he generally chooses not to. *** At 22:46 in the video, Diamond Tiara is standing next to the CMC's as they laugh at... Diamond Tiara, who just fell into the ink on the ground. Animation error, or is there an evil (good?) clone of Diamond Tiara out there somewhere? (Okay, it's an animation error). *** We get to see Twist again in this episode. If you've forgotten, she was Apple Bloom's friend before AB met the other CMC's. *** Silver Spoon (Diamond Tiara's friend) is seen celebrating Featherweight getting his cutie mark, which led many to believe that perhaps Silver Spoon isn't as mean as she seems to be, and is just that way because of Diamond Tiara. From this episode onward, there were a lot of fans hoping to someday see Silver Spoon break away from such a toxic friend and be her own pony. *** Nobody else has ever caught this, but at 11:28 in the video, a cutie mark-less Junebug (my avatar) appears from out of thin air to give Applejack a back massage. She immediately disappears when the scene cuts away to Rainbow Dash. Nothing else to say. You're 1 step away from the season finale!

This episode really emphasizes how mean, judgmental, and hypocritical people can be when it comes to. We see this with the mane six particularly rarity is with her initial reaction to what the CMC were doing with the gabby gums column. She did not care about the nasty and cruel stories they were writing until of course they wrote a hit piece on her specifically. This is one of the best episodes of season two. First of course is the great character building for the CMC but also a relatable message and commentary on modern day journalism especially those who write for those god awful gossip magazines Ex. TMZ and People.

After misclicking my comment got deleted. Bah! Essentially, I wholeheartedly agree with Brony Time. Most of the adult ponies featured in the episode (aside from Twilight, and background/supporting ponies) were outright awful and overwhelmingly hypocritical. I like Rarity, but she was the WORST here. She snooped, got told off and SNOOPED AGAIN. Then, after lecturing Sweetie Belle on gossiping, she promptly went and told everyone who Gabby Gums is. She learned NOTHING. Cheerilee is also extremely negligent here. An advisor doesn't friggin' leave the children to fend for themselves! I do love how the CMC handled things in the end and that they just weren't going in on everything, they showed genuine conflict and growth. Anyhow, while the episode is far from terrible, many of the characters don't come off well at all in this one-- especially Rarity.

I totally get what you're saying about the olde timey newsmen. You can especially see that sort of thing in old black and white movies and serials.

Tamara Burt

No, Featherweight wasn't a traitor. He was told to take photos of EVERYTHING. It was just rotten luck that that included the moments the CMCs were embarrassed.

No one was really that terrible other then Diamond Tiara. The hypocrisy of only getting pissed when it was aimed at them was kind of the whole point and very common, Rarity, the first time it was hardly 'snooping' the paper was sticking out of the bag, it just caught her attention. The second, we don't know the context of why she opened the bag, she might have seen what looked like the diary first, but ti's still hardly that horrible given the context. Nor is telling the others, at the very least she had every right and reason to tell AJ given Applebloom was involved, and AJ and 'secret' go together about as well as Pinkie Pie and sanity.
