And so as the year comes to an end, I find myself thinking back on how the project has come over the time that it's been ongoing. It goes without saying that most that you've seen come to pass this year in relation to Password has come about because of you, and for that I am incredibly thankful.

I feel now's a good time to go over some of the things that I feel went well and some of the things that didn't before getting into what 2020 has in store.

The Bad

I think my biggest regret is the whole fiasco about Tyson and musk. I leaned to hard in the wrong way and had to deal with that for a while, but thankfully it's fixed. I'll admit that it's totally a thing that I did poorly and have to suffer the consequences of, but by and large hopefully nothing else in this sorta vein comes up.

Then we have the Oz interrogation. It was likely a little too lofty for me to shoot for but we got it... functional? Something different, didn't quite work out, but still work having I think. It'll be something I can use again in future so there's that.

Running the Discord server has been both a good and a bad, but the stress has gotten to me a few times where I've acted out of hand, and for that I apologise. For the most part it's a pleasure to talk to all of you on a near daily basis, and even for those no longer around, I still think about the time we've spent together.

The Good

Reaching 300 patrons is insane. Or at least I went in with this chuffed at the prospect of getting 100 but triple that is always nice. Hopefully I can continue to earn that patronage.

Also on the topic of reaching out to people, just being able to talk to other devs has helped Password and hopefully by extension other projects, some of which are looking promising for the new year. But not only that, Dyne (ExtraCurricular Activities) and Carbon (Minotaur Hotel) have shed insight on avenues for both merch and marketing respectively which should mean good things in 2020.

While I'm predominantly a one man army, tagging in some people for assistance has been a blessing. Maodun and Rocky assisted with some of the more finnicky parts of what I was trying to accomplish coding-wise. Civ has been a great mentor and person to collaborate with as far as composing and has made some great stuff for Password (more down below), and Taikah and Brosko have been plugging away at getting the new UI looking nice and fancy too (also more down below).

Stuff to come in 2020

Did someone say merch? No? Well I guess I will. It's coming, likely in shirts given the desire for some of them in particular, but I'll word people up when it's all finalised.

Music! Civ (and to a much lesser extent me) have been putting together tracks for Password so we can move away from the two things plaguing it: Free Songs and poor mixing. No longer will you have that one track that's really quiet while the others are really loud! Well hopefully; once it's all done and implemented there'll be some tweaking likely. Same goes for sound effects.

UI! I said before Taikah and Brosko have been putting together some sweet stuff! Let's have a look, shall we? (Obviously these are subject to change but it's close to what we're going with)

First up... uh... Well it's very different, huh? Day counter is the main thing I'm hyped for. But an added objectives dropdown to keep track of things. Might not be useful now, but when things start getting a bit hard to manage, might be good. Rest of it is just moving away from the default Ren'Py UI into something more stylised and appropriate.

And of course, this extends to the other menus as well. Going for more of a notebook/journal aesthetic, but again subject to change.

We'll have more to show when things get locked in proper, maybe with some of the new sprites if I have the time after I get back from my interstate pseudo-vacation. But if you have thoughts or comments before we get to that part, by all means let me know!

All in all I'm hype for 2020, hopefully come this time next year we'll be well into the meat of the game and maybe near closing out some of the plotlines or character arcs before the final stretch. A lot is going to hinge on how the plot plays out and feedback (which as always, I read every last bit of it).

So from me, and the cast, plus everyone that has helped me along the way, thanks for 2019, and hope to see you around in 2020!

This looks awesome and the idea of merch is exciting, I can't wait to start helping, can't afford too much at the moment but I'm getting another raise soon and I know the first thing to jump at 😃

The reason why we are supporting you is because of your & your helpers truly amazing job and because we think the project has a possible bright future. At this point I wasn't sure what to make of the writing. A Tyson and musk fiasco is unknown to me. Would you like to offer a short explanation? The whole idea, Oz, reminds me of some of the WSSAP (Wolfstar Sins and Paradise) characters, which are similar hard to write, I assume. Have you heard of WSSAP? I read other visual novel creators helped you along the way. Wolfstar from WSSAP may be a reliable help, Idk. You should really take your time with fleshing out his personality and characteristics, everything that mystifies him or, if you are happy how he turned out, move on. Now I have another question. Are you planning on adding female characters? I think you wrote once you are not comfortable with writing them. Was it someone else? I can't recall. And so far, at least, we don't know yet, if we will ever see the outside world. Yeah, I bet you can almost get lost on discord and other social media platforms. Not so myself, but I'm not a content creator anyway. You will figure something out or did already. If you need more constructive criticism I could engage myself over there, if not I'm still here. (Not trying to sound so important, just want to be of help) I had been reading many and many good books in my life, fantasy (science-fiction too, ever heard of Perry Rhodan?) especially and some horror, this could help, again Idk. When I saw you reached, was it the second milestone (300 patrons is huge!), I was as well very happy. This makes me believe that you will also reach the big number, 1000, one day, like The Echo Project or WOTB or EA. By the way despite not having a lot patron followers WSSAP is already a pretty big and advanced game. That said WSSAP is rather fantasy, but has it's horror elements. (For anyone who reads this: This is not supposed to be an ad!) 2020 is... a big event for everyone, not only PASSWORD. Although, let's focus on PASSWORD sha'll we. ;) To be honest PASSWORD merch sounds a lot better to me, than I first thought it would and it would, believe it or not, be the first merch of any VN I consider buying. (If I feel comfortable running around with a gay-visual novel-character-T-shirt is another question to be answered, I admit) Music!! Even though I would turn it down in game, to a minimum, because of the stupid language I am normaly speaking, the sound of it is, how do I put it, ah whatever, let's go with delightful. *grin* (I hope I triggered some of you with all these commas, since as I know, many tend to not use them at all. Lol) UI!! Very cool, yep, I also like the sound of that! Aesthetics and detail is something, which turns every aspect of reality into something more... fulfilling. Imagine a boring basement in it's known “basement colores“ (grey preferably) to basically whatever you like. A rainforest, as example, for that matter and you know what I mean. The UI looks, not sure if clean is the right term, but I like it. The objective thing? A very nice idea. Together with the UI it fits the whole 'detective & horror theme'. Maybe changing the blue color could be considered, not only because blue is heavy on the eyes, but because blue is somewhat too... friendly? I kinda like the grey in the menu. Grey+brown? I think grey+brown are the rainforest-colors we can work with, if you know what I mean. A few thoughts I had, useful or not is yours to decide. Best of luck and succes for the future of your little one man army! Thank you for everyone who is working on PASSWORD and all patrons too. And also, happy rest, of the remaining vacation you were mentioning, for you. Hope you find some peace, wherever you are. Workoholics may be efficient, but not for a long shot. ;P

Haven't seen you in a while. Hi, how are you holding up? :) As I wrote down below PASSWORD merch would be the first one, ever, I consider buying, but tell me about affording something... *sigh* Well, I guess I can work with what I have and I hope you too. ;)

The Mysterious M3tav0X

I'm really looking forward to another year of content from PASSWORD! I really enjoy this VN and I can't wait to see where the story goes from here!

Hi Grizz. I like the default Ren'Py UI as is implemented in the current version but if you want to improve it that is fine too. About the music you can find a lot of good music in free sites under the Creative Commons License. I think that you could improve the music a lot only selecting a good bunch of songs from these sites or paying a cheap license from sites like: https://www.storyblocks.com/ About the game in a whole. I have being supporting some Visual Novels as a Patron all the year. But Password has become my favorite Visual Novel beating Echo, Tennis Ace, After Class, etc. So I wish that in 2020 you will get all the support needed to improve the game and can you can harvest the fruits of your hardwork. About the merchandise, I would love to have Dean's and Tyson's Dakimakuras.

I may not be around the discord much any more, but I'm still supporting this wonderful Visual Novel that helped bring me together with some of the best people I've met last year! Thanks Grizz, I look forward to what comes next!

What Tyson fiasco?

badger225

Think he means the part where Tysons working out and you comment on liking his musk or not. I would think it becomes a problem when you then need to write an edited sex scene involving musk or new scenes avoiding it or if the scene only happens if you like it suddenly having to create another scene doing something else entirely. Adding in something like fetishes can add up to a lot of work for each one so I can see that being a faff, best to just go mundane and add in extra later imo.

Hey, new patron here! I just read a couple routes of the most recent public build before the new year and am really liking this so far! I didn't feel like I learned too much from the OZ thing, but it was a neat experiment that kinda blew me away with its ambitiousness! I did get a handful of proper responses out of him and was left wondering if I could learn more if I would just think of the right questions. The journal menu is VERY nice! The main UI has nice style too but feels... more cluttered? If there's one thing I have to give the default UI it's that it's very clean and not distracting. I can see the appeal of having an objective tracker though, and I like the idea of the day always being visible. Suppose it'll feel at least a little less cluttered when the dropdown isn't actively dropped down. For the dialog, I wonder if a just slightly bolder or larger version of the font would still look nice. As-is I'm wondering if it will be a little harder on my eyes for prolonged reading sessions, but that could definitely just be me. Good to hear about the music! The balancing between the various music tracks and background ambience is possibly my only real gripe so far, but a big one. Some of it was usually barely audible for me because I just left the volume at a good level for the loudest track, lest I turn it way up for some other tracks only to get my ears blasted out later by the loudest one. If the audio files were left loose in the folder like with some other VNs I might have been half tempted to try something with them myself; maybe just export the oggs to mp3s so I could run them through a batch processor like MP3Gain then convert them back to ogg or something. I dunno. If you're solving the problem by just getting new tracks that's cool! Nothing wrong with good free tracks in my book, but original music does ensure the VN always has its own completely unique atmosphere. I did recognize a couple of the current tracks, and though it wasn't a big deal here I have had instances with another VN where a really recognizable track pulled me out of my immersion a little bit. Anyway, really enjoying the characters and the mystery a lot so far! Kinda love the core mechanic the VN gets its name from as well; it's fun to try guessing and I feel a little smart if I can get it on the first try like I have so far. I'm especially intrigued by all the extra places a secret password might be implemented to alter the course of the story, maybe get an alternate early ending, or even just unlock some easter egg. Looking forward to seeing where you go with this!

Ha! Now I wish my English was better, so I could've written my “wall of text“ from above better... Anyway, glad I'm not the only one who is purposefully trying to give feedback. ;) For the hard-on-the-eyes part why don't you use a slight blue-light filter? You could of course turn it of whenever early nsfw content is happening. I suggest one that is NOT orange. I'm not sure with blue-light filters on the pc though.

Hi! I want to comment on the UI, it's as good as it is but, it looks too friendly? It might take away the suspense I feel with the dark and clean UI. The vault's background image and the current renpy UI really does it for me, I feel so nervous when I go to the vault haha. Thank you for working on this game! :)
