I like that it has a supercharger on it instead of a turbo. Must be a Detroit diesel?

In Australia we call it two stroke but I've worked on Detroit boat motors which have been referred as two cycle

Also I've heard that two stroke diesels can actually start and run in the wrong direction if cranked the wrong way

If it wasn't connected up to a gearbox would running the wrong way be a problem. Never been quite sure what actually happens if it runs the wrong way

well a motor as complex as this may not do it and if it did it would surly end in needing some major repairs: the fuel gets injected after TDC instead of before, this make the combustion very inefficient and sooty the horse power is thus greatly reduced but the engine can still run quite fast. the sooty exhaust the gets shoved through the blower (which I guess becomes a sucker) and the air cleaner which is ruined almost immediately. running backwards puts extra stress on the cam which could be broken and if that happens the motor would stop pretty quickly as the pistons slam into the valves and break.

Yeah I'd say that would do it. Some of my favour diesel failures have been on some big generators and marine diesels. Parts of turbos pinging through the intake and ripping valves apart. I don't do much of the mechanicals though. Only deal with electrics. I've seen what happens when a interlock fails and connects a generator(not running) to shore power (3ø mains). Turned a 50kw generator into a 50kw motor
