Hey all! I added a bit extra to the end of the video. I’m worried it will come across like “I’m not racist I have a black friend” which is not what I want. Let me know what you think and any changes before I make it public. Should I add a bit more telling people to be safe?

Unrelated but here’s a quick video that I plan to split up and use for the intro and end of the shaggy main mushroom video. I think it’s pretty cool as is so I thought I’d share.

I think it's a good addition. It definitely might come across to "I have a black friend" to some, but anybody who knows your videos knows you're a good guy who just wants to share knowledge with the world.

Thanks Cody. You're amazing and I appreciate this message. It may cost you some fans, but that's nothing compared to a lost life at the hands of a cop or in the desperation of poverty.

Hey Cody I feel you should wait for more responses as well but I feel like this was a good thing to add to the end but it does kinda feel like a "I'm not racist I have a black friend" hopefully some others will respond with more insight but I do relate to you also being a straight white male so my opinion isn't as good on the issue as someone of color's might be.

Also, I wouldn't worry about the fear of it appearing as "I have a black friend..." as this is usually only criticized if its being used to deflect from someone's racist attitudes or actions.

Anonymous

Hey Cody I think u should try to change it for the few viewers who are new

Hey Cody! I totally understand and agree with not normally talking about current events, but I'm really glad you said something this time. I understood your message and I like how you put it. As others have said, as a white woman my opinion only goes so far on this issue.

It does come across a little like you're pointing out that you have a black friend, but if Max agreed to be in the video, I don't see why it's a problem. I really don't think anything you said was damaging to your character or anything, it actually just reinforces the good nature that comes through in your other videos, in my opinion. I come from a city that has very few minorities living here, and when I moved to a bigger city where the majority of students at my college weren't white, it really opened my eyes that people are just people. I think it's a positive thing that you've been able to voice your opinions and recognize that. Bringing attention to the Black Lives Matter movement is what gets people talking, and I think you've done exactly what you've wanted to do here at the end of this video. Also, it's nice to know I'm not the only one pitch forking huge piles of leaves and compost, haha. I have a 50ft by 80ft garden in my back yard.

I think you were able to get your message of "I make videos to share my knowledge with others, no matter who they are", across well, and the "black lives matter" end screen reinforces your support for that cause specifically.

I'd leave it out, fwiw. It's like every business I've ever done business emailing me how sorry they feel about COVID-19, and now every single one has to do the same about this. Unless it's something particularly new/relevant to your channel, just leave it out - we assume you're a good person anyway. And, it's a tough area to navigate; the amount of looting/destruction and covid-19 spreading that mixed in with the otherwise good message is tough to separate, and undoubtedly controversial. There's almost nothing you can say that won't make someone angry or unsatisfied.

It doesn't matter what you say, you will always offend someone. Most of those people will be people that have only watched a couple of your videos and are projecting on to you their opinions of what you are or should be. Be honest and sincere and the fans you need, you will have.

It's a lovely message and I don't think you should feel awkward about it at all.

I must confess that the description text had me worried, but after watching the video, I'm happy with your ending message. You acknowledged your privilege, and you've been using it to enrich other peoples' lives. This is a Good Thing. I'm grateful that you're speaking up now.

I think it's a perfect message Cody. It doesn't come across as "I have a black friend" because you mentioned who he was and why he was there and that you were happy to help him out. Your intent is very clear and I can't even catch a hint of ulterior motive to the message. Not everybody is going to like it, but you know it's the right thing to do. You're a teacher, plain and simple, and your want to enrich other people's lives with knowledge is what I love about you. Much respect.

It's hard to know what will be seen as sincere and not just virtue signaling. I think the message is good but there is no way to foresee how it will be recieved. Follow your heart and know however it's taken, you fans and subscribers will still be there supporting you.

Cull2ArcaHeresy

Wonder how many people would have noticed him if you didn't point it out

I think it's best to just ignore divisive issues, you might just shoot yourself in the foot with them.

I think your addition is thoughtful, I wouldn’t worry about it being perceived poorly.

As the white, male, non-american that I am, I really shouldn't comment on the ending, but for me it sounded good. It can't be worse than posting a black, empty image to instagram... I enjoyed the rest of the video too. You could maybe include even more about what goes on in the pile. Its just "compost", but I have to be honest and say that I really don't know much about whats going on in there, other than there is bacteria involved.

I think LVE is right -- its a nice thought and I like it -- but I'm sure some others will find an issue with it -- "oh nice half second of black lives matter" and other hateful stuff.

Anonymous

Cody, it's not because you are white, a landowner or had privileges that you should feel awkward about it. Supporting such movement is the least thing we can do, it concerns all of us, it's right, fair and ethical. You've taught us a lot, this made me feel proud of you. #BlackLivesMatter Strong support form France.

From a protester in Minneapolis, an old, white, disabled guy, it is perfect.

Anonymous

It might be more appropriate to make a separate, concise, video that specifically addresses your support. It would be more obvious and easy to find with a specific title.

Jammi is right 😘

Cody you look very stressed in the last video we care more about ur health than our entertainment

Barmp

Is the message still live? I don't see it at all, and I don't recall the previous video having an intro.

Anonymous

I don't see the message either. On a completely different note since I don't see the message, I'd like to commend the music on in this video. Really awesome stuff

I've been composting leaves as well! Not as sophisticated as your method. I just put them on a heap with some kitchen scraps en turned them once in a while. Been growing pumpkins on them and they seem to be doing fine! Love your videos!
