There is a phone number on the lunch box. You should blur it out.

Maybe for the people who watch your YouTube that don’t know science very well you could explain the reason behind the air in the balloon expanding is the reason it pops, more sciencey stuff :)

Hmm good visuals and a Rad meter to detect Rads from Space. Very cool Cody. Good Job! :)

Don’t let the first failed attempt pop your balloon! We look forward to the next ascent.

Hi Cody! I was wondering, what does a balloon like that cost? Do you buy it online or at a specialty store?

Nani Isobel

You can get a little swivel with two loops to isolate the payload from the 'chute and balloon. They are a few bucks for five. It will reduce the problem to just stabilizing the payload. (I use them on birdfeeders to stop the birds from spinning the feeder and unscrewing the mounts.) "eye eye swivel"

I've always wanted to launch a high power model rocket from a weather balloon. The engineering would be interesting to launch from a drop the steer up without hitting the balloon or tumble from the winds.

Lack of wind is actually the issue - which is why sounding rockets don't use this design :P Once you get high up there is much less friction, so the rocket just swings wildly around - easier to launch it from the ground and use a first stage to get it past the dense air. I'm also not sure it's legal to launch a model rocket from a balloon like that, but that's another story entirely ;)

Take it your pal had all the requisite paperwork for a launch? In the UK a high altitude balloon needs 28 days of notice and a bunch of paperwork - is the FAA similarly inclined in the US? :P

CodysLab

We got it university surplus for only 60 bucks. Normally they are several hundred.

Pool noodles? That's low tech. I would expect at least a 3-axis gyroscope stabilization from you. :)

https://www.faa.gov/uas/getting_started/registration/ It seems to be $5 and no notice.

The was my suggestion from a website I skimmed. I fully expect Cody to come up with a more elegant solution--like a bamboo stick with weights on each end :D

Jasper

Seems like you could accidentally release the balloon early very easily?

Is there a possibility that your hand warmers cause the GoPro to shut down? GoPros are programmed to power down at 125F. I believe I read that they even have a heater built into them to keep the battery pack warm and cold temperatures.

I love the spinning I am sure that you could turn that into a scanning widescreen of the assent.

Weather balloons are awesome. Next time you should look into using Amateur Radio with an APRS beacon to report the position to https://aprs.fi. Look up Tracksoar or Byonics for all-in-one solutions

You’re the first person I’ve seen, to put a geiger counter (Or radmeter) on a weather balloon. This was definitely very interesting, and cool to see the radiation levels rise as the balloon ascended. Great video, Cody.
