Wouldn't counter emf be enough force to slow it down? I'm thinking of losses in a motor, but seems like the same thing and might cause the eddy current there?

This may be far fetched but could the magnet in the vacuum pump motor be having just the smallest effect on the spinning?

The same magnetic flux that you used to spin up the magnet from outside the chamber is slowing it down.

what would happen if you supercooled the magnet to near zero so it would have properties similar to a superconductor dropping the resistance significantly? wouldent that decrease the effect of the spinning conductor in a magnetic field ?
