First off, don't worry-- there's no spoilers here! We're just looking for your thoughts!

With Changeling Tale, our intent is to create satisfying, individual TF-themed story lines within the framework of an overarching story that will be revealed across multiple playthroughs. The broader story doesn't need to be revealed in order to enjoy the individual romantic story lines, but it's there to provide three things: 1) a fun puzzle, 2) additional lore, and 3) an extra reason to try other romances (replayability).

As we continue to sprinkle in hints about some of the big questions Changeling Tale raises (Who is the Narrator? Why do the MacLeod girls transform? --etc.), we want to get a feel for how deep you'd like these overarching mysteries to be. For the purposes of this poll, we've arranged them into three classes:

Solved Through the Narrative  (Easy):

Clues are interspersed in the narrative across multiple story lines. Identifying and assembling the clues is fairly easy, and once pieced together, a clear picture is formed.

Solved Through Hidden Clues  (Difficult) :

As with the above, except that some critical clues may be hidden as Easter Eggs, or in the interactive background galleries.

Solved Through Community  (Very Difficult) :

Clues are deeply hidden and not necessarily obvious. No clear picture is provided, and readers will need to work together within the Changeling Tale community to discover the truth.

Which approaches do you guys like most in your games? Are there additional methods we should consider? This poll isn't necessarily going to determine anything specific; it's just meant to help gauge your feelings on the subject. We also welcome discussion in Discord or in the comments down below!

Since Changeling Tale has several overarching mysteries, we plan to use multiple approaches--i.e. we'll make the biggest and most important secrets easier to uncover, and less pressing questions a little harder to answer. Your feedback will help us determine which way to lean, and we expect to learn a thing or two from discussion in the comments, as well!

Listen... It would be better to give an option for each mode in the settings of the game (asking which one when they first start the game). Chosing one may not work for everyone, so giving a choice of the three in the game could help the game in the long run.

That sounds like a lot of code, as well as three different ways of going through the whole game just for some plot...

Nocturn3

I think either through narrative or via clues might work best. While piecing together stuff with people is great now with a discord of fans waiting like ravenous boars for scraps. When it comes time for this game to finally reach a wider playerbase; not everyone is gonna team up to start piecing this together like a reddit mystery hard drive or something. Some might be more personal. Hell, you could say that if someone wants to learn more that the community might help anyway. OR the community would be doing work to uncover stuff regardless if its hidden or not. So keep it within the game...unless it's piecing the mystery of why the hell nobody BUT Malc. seems to wear underwear in this world. THEN it might be good to get the community on board.\

I like the idea of solving things with a little more effort, but with the pace of today, please take pity on us. Give us a good ending and let the hidden clues be found or not, but please don't let that take away from the enjoyment of the main story. Thank you! I mean, nothing takes away the enjoyment of win faster for me than realizing I was "duped" by a cheap ploy or something I overlooked.

Lunatico Ursus

in general I would prefer the hidden clues, but this time I will say that I prefer it through the game's own narrative. mainly because English is not my first language so it is still a bit difficult for me to find Easter eggs. but, any decision is good

Nekonomicon

Hmm I'd prefer it to just be in the narrative itself but hidden in the Easter eggs will be fine too.

I don't want to be spoon fed, however, I play the game to have fun and I love a good puzzle but I don't want to be scrounging around for any scrap of info there is understand what is going on.

JourneymanIK

I like difficult but not impossible.

JourneymanIK

And some going to third party stuff feels a bit cheapish. A game should be a full experience.

I feel like a mix of 1 and 2. I enjoy figuring the main plot through the narrative, whether through multiple playthroughs or not. The main story should be understandable for the average consumer. However the background info, or the lore, should be from the narrative and through interacting with the world. This can go deeper than just the narrative because it requires exploration and feels like solving a puzzle, but doesn't leave you dissatisfied if you don't get every piece of info because the main information was obtained. This lets the ones who want the story to get the story, and those who are deeply interested in the finer details to feel rewarded for taking the time to look for it. This way, no one is dissatisfied from playing how they wish. It doesn't create endless tedium for those who just want to play and no delve in, and doesn't leave those who want to solve a mystery feeling incomplete from being handed everything. You feel like you've solved a mystery and are discovering the world. Just my two cents. I'm reminded of the Dragon Age series. If you take the time to inspect the lore (codex) and read the books, you get a much deeper understanding of the world than if you just played the games but the games are complete stories in and of themselves so you don't have to go out of your way to read the books or lore to still understand the overall world and game plot.

Allow me to instead give some counterpoints against #3: Discovering things through the community stuff can be engaging, but at some point, everything that can be discovered has been discovered, and gets shared online, often robbing others of the experience of discovering these for themselves. In the same vein, assuming that the option spawns a large community event to find out all of the details of the lore, this will likely rob people of the experience years after the event has ended, or those in the immediate time-frame, but who are unable to join due to life keeping them busy during the time-frame. The last point would also come down to those who decide to bypass the event, and just look through the code instead to find out all of that information. This has ruined several long-term events before, and the technologies for this sort of stuff is getting much better. #1 is a decent option, as it would assure that everything gets resolved during the play-through, however, It might require extra planning in order to ensure that all routes(if desired) have the potential of reaching this desired outcome. (not to say that it would be a bad thing however) Finally, I feel as if #2 may be the preferred choice, as it would push those who wish to learn more to play the game multiple times, possibly having to go through all of the various routes to uncover everything. Of course, this does not mean that it is the best option, but to me it feels like the most favorable.

Given that I haven't been able to find at least half the background elements despite clicking everywhere including where I know they should be, I gotta go with #1.

DatGhostboi

I'm going to go with one but I would like to see characters as shadowed before they are revealed which is certainly a good element. Also as I mentioned before growth effects can be interesting rewards when finding these clues. As I have stated with Marion before.

Isac Arellano

gotta go with one mainly because i still haven't found any thing even with searching with online help which is just frustrating and makes me want to walk away even with multiple playthrews on all paths -_-

Pheagle

I really enjoyed my last playthrough because I got to see Marion fully transform into a cow. It was beautiful and I'll probably do it again. Hidden clues could be nice, provided I have an example of one so I have a better idea on how to find them. I'd still like to be able to pick between Marion and the other sisters of course :P

Nova25

I haven't played this in a few months, but last I played... I never found a single of these so-called ''Easter Eggs''. So, I feel like this may prove a frustrating experience to find these ''?easter egg clues?'', just to know what's (really) going on through the game.
