Aspirin to Acetaminophen - Part 6 of 6: Acetaminophen from p-aminophenol

This is the final part of the series, where the p-aminophenol is converted to the acetaminophen. Using acetic anhydride, the p-aminophenol is going to be acetylated. The reaction is carried out in water at room temperature. Acetic anhydride does react with water, but it happens slowly. By including an excess of acetic anhydride, we can assure that the acetylation goes to completion. Excellent series. The final yield really wasn't that surprising, given the number of steps in the synthesis. Still, very interesting to watch. Thanks for this.

Suggestions? Synthesize nile red! :)

nilered

haha yeah, that is a good idea! Ill actually put some serious thought into it

Excellent series Nile red ! I vote for hydroxylamine HCL , I've tried and got a real bad % , ! Cheers

nilered

Ive heard that the process isnt exactly the easiest. What method did you try?

Anonymous

You sound a little bummed out. I hear a 4 I need about a 7. :)

nilered

Oh no! I've been trying to alter my style of narration a little and I guess I made it a little too flat :(. It's not that bad is it?

nilered

Also, is the contrast of the final product blown out for you? YouTube messed it up apparently. It's fine in my video editor. I might reupload it

Anonymous

No it is not bad at all but if you watch TV - and I have seen some productions of small shows - the director will cut, state what I just said "need more" or "need less", and then the actor will restate with more or less "umph". Your words are perfect but you also need to "sell" your product in excitement and enthusiasm. You may not believe this but people can hear you smile. No Joke.

nilered

Do you find that I generally dont "sell" it or it's just this video?

nilered

ive realized why i sound this way...i recorded this video with a sinus infection. I was actually miserable, ha. I am going to redo some of the audio because i can't unhear the pain

Anonymous

Ahh good point, if you look at your 5th or 10th videos and compare the audio to the last one or two you may hear the difference. Watch Cody's Lab. He "sells" each video. I walk away going in my mind that he really likes digging in the mine or being stupid with mercury etc... In the business the guy in front of the camera is always referred to as the "talent". People can hear pain too :)

nilered

What do you mean by 5th and 10th videos? So you think this is just a thing in my recent video or so? Also, I think the big difference is that Cody's videos mostly have the audio recorded at the same time as the video and he is not "narrating." It makes it a lot easier to add genuine interest. What do you think I can do to improve?

nilered

I re-recorded all of the audio for the entire video!! Ill reupload it later today. I think you will definitely notice a difference.

Sorry, I work early mornings. Sounds great! Less monotone. More comfortable. Sounds like you are talking to a classroom. I received the beakers. Very nice! Looking forward to my next car video with them. Define your customer or audience next that you are marketing to. If you are marketing to beginners then almost always talk out abbreviations such as "Hydrogen NMR". Beginners to chemistry have no idea that this means Hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Or when you say Concentrated Sulfuric Acid we have no idea what makes it less than 100% or what is mixed in it to make it less than 100%. This also makes you sound smarter to beginners. In your excellent videos I feel that you are marketing to other professionals which is also awesome if that is your target. Just a little food for thought and not in any way a detraction from your excellent videos! I really love them!

I look forward to the N2O video.

nilered

You received them already? That was really fast! And none broken in the mail? I was so worried about that, ha. When you make your video with them, be sure to send me a link! Also I know what you mean. I think the issue is the way that the videos are organized. They are more like a demonstration than a fun discussion, so it would be weird to have a more casual tone. They are also semi scripted, so that also gives a more artificial feel. I do want to make some more "casual" videos because I think those are imortant too. I want to start regularly uploading chemistry "tidbits" where I'll just talk about something interesting. I feel in these videos, I could be more casual and be more myself. They will be shorter videos and I wouldn't charge patrons for it either. Regarding your comment on details and abbreviations, it is very hard to satisfy everyone. I need to not bore the professionals, yet at the same time not be too technical and put off casual viewers. So lately I've been skimming over some details, but including small write-ups in the video with more technical info. I definitely appreciate the input. I always want to improve what I do!

nilered

I really need to stop pcrastinating and do it... maybe I'll do it as the next one I film.

Anonymous

Just checked. All of them are unbroken and ready for work!

nilered

True! I forgot about that ha, I'll either so Nile red or caffeine next

Can't wait to see you extract salicylic acid from willow. I've done that in the past and I'm really curious how are you gonna do that. Amazing content thank you!

nilered

What method did you use to extract it? Solvent extraction? Or maybe just boil it in water, filter and let it crystallize?

Anonymous

I would also like to see more of this. Maybe aspirin to superglue or something like that....:P

Anonymous

:D Only half joking though - is cyanoacrylate synth (not from aspirin of course) something doable for a future video?

Anonymous

I just used maceration, I had a lot of starting material and boiling it sounded messy so I just let it macerate at room temp and then I evaporated, hydrolyzed and oxidized it to optain salicylic acid.
