 Hello Patrons,

There are now almost 500 of you which is amazing!

Wasteland Bounty Hunter Digital Exclusive Bonus

The model below will be available to download when we hit 600 Patrons. This model is a Digital Exclusive - We may sell a resin version at some point but we will never offer a digital version except to Patrons who are signed up when we put it up for download.

Hollow Scatter Terrain and Pre-Supported/Hollowed Ogre for May Patrons

For Patrons who joined in time to get access to last months release the Sync folder now contains versions of the some of the larger scatter terrain features which have been partly hollowed on the underside and optimised at a good angle for printing on a resin machine.  The Pre-Supported Characters folder now contains two versions of the Ogre which have been hollowed.  We apologise for the delay!

If you intend to download/print any of these parts please read the extra info at the bottom of this post.

We did a test print of the Ogre yesterday on our Photon and it came out really nicely! Apologies for the poor image quality, our proper photography set up is in the studio.

The July Survey! (only open until Midnight this Sunday UK time, so we can make a start asap)

This one is quite a bit shorter and should take less than 5 minutes to fill out.

As well as a question on different projects, we also want your views on a few other important questions which came up after our Big Survey. Thanks for taking the time to help us improve the project!

We have three options we are pretty excited about, please only select "HIGHEST PRIORITY" for one of the options!

Samurai - Regiments line infantry with Matchlock rifle weapon options (one historical, one sci-fi), plus a couple of different torsos and helmet options reflecting different armour periods. We would also do a couple of characters which are more command/melee orientated, and a Cannon (again with sci-fi and historical barrel options)

Armoured Renegades - Following on from the Boilersuit renegades we did in resin a while ago. Heretical/traitor infantry with irregular plate armour, spikes, chain mail, tattered cloth/leather and similar, plus some supporting characters and other elements.

Modern Post-Apocalypse - A set of mixed civilian and military parts to make modular survivor miniatures for any kind of modern post-apocalypse setting/game system.  At least one large mutant enemy. This set will feature a lot of equipment/conversion parts ideal for mixing with our resin ranges or other digital releases to make veterans/irregular forces.

The remaining questions are about how we organise the Patreon.

The most important question concerns the layout of our modular STL files. For the first release, we exported all the separate components with an orientation optimised for adding supports to print the parts separately. This is OPTION A, like this example -

Several Patrons have suggested an alternative, in which we export all the separate components so that when multiple components are loaded into the same 3D viewer/edit software, they are pre-aligned to make up a whole figure.

The image below shows how the parts would appear initially in a program on the left, and how they would look loaded separately/moved apart on the right. This is OPTION B

The advantage of doing is this way is that you can import all the modular components you want for a figure and then combine and move/re-export locally, to print entire models in one solid component. This will usually make clean up/support removal/assembly faster and easier.

The disadvantage is that if you want to print separate components, you will need to manually reorientate each component to optimise the angle for adding supports.

If we had unlimited time, we would simply upload both options and you could choose, but at the moment, we only realistically have the resources to export in one style or the other. We will go with the majority.

Releasing models at the beginning of the month

We've had quite a bit of feedback that releasing models at the end of the month is confusing and frustrating for new Patrons. The only way to switch to a beginning of the month release fairly is to do a "double" with a full release on the 31st AND an immediate release the following day on the 1st.

This is doable but obviously a lot of extra work, so there is a question on various options.

Here is the link to the Survey, please submit your response before midnight this Sunday UK time:

Thanks very much everyone!  As always fire away with any questions/feedback in the comments!

Extra Info for Hollow terrain and Ogres

Printing parts semi-hollow reduces resin use and separation force on the FEP, but will leave slightly more liquid resin on the inside of the parts so be sure to soak well in IPA for 15 minutes!

It's best to pre-soak in a jar of dirty IPA to get off the majority of resin, then transfer to a second jar with a lid (pasta sauce or similar, well cleaned!)  full of enough clean IPA to fully cover the parts. Put the lid on the jar and soak for 15 minutes, giving the jar a gentle shake every so often.

For the Ogres, the pre supported versions are at 105% scale compared to the original file, which makes them about 46mm tall.  Scale at 95% to get roughly the same as the original. There is a small hole under the coat, and another in the top of the helmet to allow the hollow to drain properly, which will need filling with putty before undercoating. It's best to leave the model hanging on the build platform after printing for at least 30 minutes to drain/drip as much as possible.

The support structure is a single STL shell, so is easily removed if desired. It was made using Prusa Slicer Auto supports, plus a few manual modifications.

it finally hit me after about 15 seconds that IPA did not mean India Pale Ale but isopropyl alcohol and then everything made more sense. I was trying to figure out how hops cleaned out resin. I guess I drink more beer than print things.

Note for everyone worried on the orientation issue, you can use prusaslicer to orient the item for supports and printing even if you aren't using a prusa printer. Import the STL, right click on the model and select "orient model" and then go to export and select "export plate as STL" and open it in your slicer of choice.

Iso is getting very very hard to get lately, maybe I should use IPA

Also, getting a cheap "jewelry cleaner" is the best thing you can do for your prints. Drop a hollow model in a jar of IPA, put the jar in the cleaner, and fill the area around the jar with water. About 3 minutes and you part is super clean inside and out

anvildigitalforge

I did not know it had auto orientate! I'll try it out! Its worth noting that what the computer thinks is the best orientation, often isn't! For example character models get lain down on their back/front.. when for best detail they need to be about 20 degrees from vertical depending on the exact model.

I would be VERY interested on the samurai... but not so much on guns, tbh. Would you be adding other weapon options, like melee weapons and bows?

anvildigitalforge

We have used ultrasonic cleaners but the IPA is always directly in the cleaner - your way makes more sense and I guess the waves are transmitted through the glass? Interesting!

...okay, but the real star of the show is jungle fighter arms as STLs?! :D

anvildigitalforge

Unfortunately, I just grabbed a random pair of arms for the example. We will include jungle models in a future theme poll though, for sure.

anvildigitalforge

We would have to decide if and when we got to them. We tend not to make entirely melee equipped units but bows could be a cool option.

Ooooooh boy, modern post-apocalyptic all the way please!!! I want to make a pretty varied crew for Zona Alfa and more options for my stalkers would be awesome!

Anonymous

Zona Alfa was the game that inspired me to get back into miniatures, miniature painting, and ultimately start 3D printing. I would love to see Anvil Digital Forge's take on post-apocalyptic miniatures in the vein of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. / Zona Alfa.

The samurai would be a dream come true for my in-progress Imperial Guard army, so I'm really hoping to see it win (and hope it'll come out in resin once the pandemic's under control). The cannon has even more excited-- having some properly themed wargear beyond armor would really be a great touch!

Does anyone know if the 600 was hit to get the Wasteland Bounty Hunter Digital Exclusive Bonus i can not find him in july's download or any mention on whether the 600 was hit

anvildigitalforge

It was included in the June Release, not July. If you missed out - we hope to do more Digital Forge Exclusive freebies in future.
